Of course, Social Security has been on this path for quite some time. It's always been a concern. But now, it's become a crisis. A recent Trustees' report is projecting that Social Security reserves will be drawn down within the next 16 years. This would mean a mandatory 20 percent benefit cut across the board if drastic actions are not taken to fix this. The year 2035 seems like it's too far away to be considered a crisis. But I can assure you that is not the case. By that time, today's 51-year-olds will reach the typical retirement age, and today's youngest retirees will turn 78. Doomsday for Social Security will be here sooner than you think. And it gets even worse. Audits by the U.S. Inspector General have revealed that tens of thousands of Americans have been underpaid. These are small errors that often times go undetected- yet these small mistakes have added up to a ton of money. In fact, one in two Social Security recipients could be owed thousands of dollars in underpayments. And the thing is... most people have no idea they could be owed money.
