The 15,000 or so growers, investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, and more attending the expo are absolutely ecstatic as Canada prepares to become the first industrialized nation in the world to legalize recreational cannabis. This is the largest single-day cannabis business conference in Canada's history, and the biggest cannabis expo in North America to date. "The eyes of the world are watching Canada," Eric Costen, director general of the Canada Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Secretariat, told my team. "It is fundamentally and very different than the approaches taken in every other country on this planet." That's because Canada is ending pot prohibition, which has only obscured knowledge about marijuana and its effects on the body. Now, Canada is allowing scientific research into cannabis and its effects on our health, while giving the go-ahead to a whole new massive industry. Once Canada goes fully legal, its legal marijuana market is going to grow by more than 10x in just a couple of years - and perhaps more than 20x. According to Statista, the Canadian legal weed market will grow from $49 million in 2015 to $2.8 billion in 2020. That projected market size is just on marijuana products at retail, though. When you add in the growers, the value-added product makers, the testing labs, security, tourism, exports, and all the rest, Deloitte believes this could be a $22.6 billion industry. You won't find growth - real growth - like that in any other industry. That's why my team is in Canada - and it's why I've been pounding the table on legal marijuana investing for going on two years now. On Thursday morning, Costen reaffirmed the Senate of Canada's June 7 vote date to finally, officially legalize recreational marijuana. It's widely expected the bill will pass. And when that happens, the industry is going to kick into high gear to start sales by the end of the summer Not only that, but this new legal marketplace will overtake the illicit one - like what happened to bootleggers after alcohol prohibition ended. Brian Harriman, president and CEO of Alcool NB Liquor (ANBL), told one of my team members that, for his part, his team will accomplish this by bringing a world-class retail experience for cannabis consumers in the province of New Brunswick once legalization kicks in. Regulators in California told him that when retail cannabis became a reality in that state, the average time customers spent in the store was 17 minutes per customer. So Harriman wants ANBL to create a high-end Apple Store or jewelry store experience for pot, where customers can sit down and read about what they're buying and educate themselves on the products. Part of keeping them interested will involve making customized products available. And after legalization, he's looking to stock up to 700 different products at each store. I'm sure that the competitive pot companies are going to be all over this sort of product differentiation. That's it for now. My team is heading back into the Lift & Co.
