The Dow Jones industrial average traded 31 points higher after briefly falling 84 points. Shares of Travelers were the best-performers on the 30-stock index. The S&P 500 traded off its lows as a sharp gain in the financials sector helped the index pare earlier losses. Shares of Allstate were among the best-performing stocks in the financials sector. The Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1 percent as tech investors were left disappointed with the 12 percent rate on repatriated cash. A lot of big tech companies have scores of cash outside of the U.S. ——————— Bitcoin blasts past $7,000 to reach another record high in 2017 Bitcoin's incredible march continues in 2017 after the cryptocurrency broke $7,000 per coin for the first time. The surge even saw it go on to reach a high of $7,200 on some exchanges. The price reached a high of $7,140 on popular exchange Coinbase, that was up nine percent over the last 24 hours, but it since dropped to $7,075. That last month has been an even crazier rollercoaster -- bitcoin surpassed $5,000 on October 12 and it has defied naysayers and continued to increase steadily in recent weeks. It's fair to say that even the most optimistic bitcoin fans will have seen the currency rise beyond their expectations this year. Bubble or genuine investment opportunity? We shall see over the rest of 2017. ——————— Another blockbuster quarter for Alibaba as revenue surges 61% Alibaba's stellar financial performance continues unabated after the Chinese e-commerce giant again beat analyst expectations thanks to impressive growth in its core business at home. The firm reported total revenue of RMB 55.1 billion ($8.3 billion), beating expectations of RMB 52.2 billion according to a Reuters poll with 61 percent growth. Net profit for the period increased by 146 percent to reach RMB 17.7 billion ($2.7 billion). Alibaba raised its forecast for annual revenue growth from 49 percent to 53 percent as a result of an investment in logistics affiliate Cainiao which gave the firm a majority ownership. Revenue from core commerce increased 63 percent year-over-year to RMB 46.5 billion ($7 billion), a jump of RMB 43 billion in the previous quarter. The quarter just gone is traditionally a quiet once as the firm prepares for the 11/11 shopping bonanza -- Alibaba grossed $17.79 billion in GMV on the day last year -- but Alibaba bucked that trend this time around. ——————— Shell's strategy is working, CFO says A day after closing on the sale of billions of dollars in assets, Shell said its net quarterly profit of more than $4 billion showed "our strategy is working." "The competitive performance is further evidence of Shell's growing momentum and strengthens our firm belief that our strategy is working," Chief Financial Officer Jessica Uhl said. Shell said Thursday its net profit of $4.1 billion came from all of its business segments, though earnings came mainly from refining, higher production from new fields and improved market conditions. Net profit for the second quarter was $3.6 billion, up from the $1 billion reported for the second quarter 2016, but down about 4 percent from the first quarter. The price for Brent crude oil was near $51 per barrel when Shell announced second quarter results and was around $60.50 per barrel early Thursday. ——————— The First Airline Carrier to put a Double Bed in its Cabins Singapore Airlines Ltd, the first carrier to put a double bed in its cabins, is preparing to take airborne luxury up another notch - and catch up with a key rival. The airline on Thursday will unveil its first major overhaul across cabin classes of its Airbus SE A380s since 2007, when it became the first carrier to fly the double-decker aircraft. Singapore Air has revealed scant details, other than the likelihood of fewer suites and that the changes will be introduced in five new super-jumbo planes it will receive progressively from this year. Airlines have been trying to outdo each other when it comes to pampering the upscale business traveler. Singapore Air currently has 18 A380s with 12 suites each that feature a full-length sliding screen door. ——————— Sincerely, Stock.Guru Disclaimer DO NOT BASE ANY INVESTMENT DECISION UPON ANY MATERIALS FOUND ON THIS WEBSITE.
