Hello {NAME}, Tonight, I have a segment airing on [The List]( TV show. My very first television appearance was 16 years ago, just mere weeks after launching [Steamy Kitchen](. I had zero tv experience, and I couldn't afford a coach to teach me. I spent hours upon hours staring at Rachael Ray, Giada and Martha Stewart in my living room. I wasn't trying to learn how they cooked on tv, but rather, I focused on two things: how they connected with their viewers at home, and expressions and mannerisms. On TV, a neutral expression on your face comes across unhappy or surly. During my practice sessions at home, taping with a camcorder, I noticed that the little moments when I was focused (like chopping onions), my energy that I was projecting was grumpy. I'm not mad! I'm just focused on chopping onions and not cutting myself! That's when I realized that facial micro-expressions matter. ---Neutral came off as bothered ----Focused came off as grumpy So, I started practicing having "default smile." I walked around for three days just always having a default smile on my face, whether I was folding laundry, or out at the grocery store. You know how some people have that "resting bitch face" look? Well, a default smile is a resting happy face. It's not a full-blown, teeth showing smile (that looks fake and uncomfortable), it's waaay more subtle than that. Here, give it a try: Rest every single muscle in your face. Relax your eyes, smooth out the forehead, unclench your jaw. Neutral. Now, take a deep breath, and close your eyes. Exhale. On your next inhale, imagine a beautiful beach. wiggling your toes in the sand. maybe there's an empty hammock over there. a beer in your hand? -> exhale. -> and relax all those facial muscles again -> open your eyes. -> -> that's your resting happy face. It's really just a micro-expression of pleasant contentment. The expression is more about having soft, kind eyes, a relaxed jaw, and just the slightest upturn of the edges of your lips. My intention for practicing a resting happy face was for my television appearances. But I practiced it so much that it just became my all-the-time neutral expression. And you know what? My resting happy face changed everything. My neutral mood became neutral happy mood. If I was experiencing a negative emotion, my neutral happy face smoothed out the edges of discomfort, dialed back annoying feelings a few notches. The difference is subtle. I just became a little more cheerful. Things annoyed me a little less. Strangers smiled at me more. Those little tiny emotional changes everyday, stacked. Humans are constantly trying to justify their emotions. If you're in a bad mood, everything bothers you. I noticed that my eyes were constantly searching, identifying tiny awesome things to justify my resting happy face. -> Oh, that's a pretty flower. -> What a cute pattern on her dress. -> I love that song playing in the next car over. Yup....resting happy face is totally appropriate. yeaaaaahhhh....life is good. Give it a try...and see if resting happy face makes you feel just a little better, every day. Oh, if you're free tonight, The List might be playing in your market.
