FROM THE ARCHIVES Nov. 4, 2017: Family and friends carried the casket of American Indian Movement co-founder Dennis Banks along the shore of Leech Lake to his place of burial at Battle Point Cemetery. Banks, one of the country's most influential American Indian activists, was a key figure in the 1970s standoff with federal agents at Wounded Knee. Banks died Oct. 29, 2017, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester from complications following open-heart surgery, his family said. He was 80.
