[Five people were in the vehicle when it crashed and split in half]( shortly after 2 a.m., police said.
- Hennepin County sheriff under investigation for impaired driving in I-94 rollover crash: Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson is suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol when [he crashed a vehicle early Wednesday in western Minnesota](, state authorities said. The 41-year-old Hutchinson acknowledged in a statement to making the "inexcusable decision to drive after drinking alcohol." The sheriff's attorney, Fred Bruno, told the Star Tribune that Hutchinson will remain in Alomere Hospital in Alexandria "for a couple more days" as [he's treated for three broken ribs, and head and hip injuries](. Bruno said he expects the results of a test to show that Hutchinson was legally too intoxicated to drive.
- Daunte Wright's passenger takes stand in second day o testimony in Potter trial: The young woman who was a passenger in Daunte Wright's car when he was fatally shot by ex-Brooklyn Center police officer Kimberly Potter testified Thursday of his final harrowing moments. Alayna Albrecht-Payton, 20, [opened the second day of testimony in Potter's manslaughter trial]( in Hennepin County District Court. She told the jury that she and Wright had dated for about three weeks, and he was "just so nervous and flustered" during the April 11 traffic stop that led to his shooting when Potter fired her handgun after shouting "Taser, Taser Taser."

Five years earlier, the small school had been saved from closure. But on Dec. 1, the school board voted to cease operations after the 2021-22 school year, touching off considerable emotion and anger â [everything but the sharing of potential landing spots for the kids.](
- St. Paul City Council unanimously approves budget, 6.17% levy increase: The St. Paul City Council on Wednesday [unanimously passed an almost $713 million budget]( for 2022, marking a 13% increase from the year before thanks to federal pandemic relief aid and a property tax levy hike.
- Met Council will send light-rail trains to Louisiana for needed upkeep: On Wednesday, [the Metropolitan Council awarded a $7.7 million contract to Florida-based RailcarCo.](, which will oversee rust mitigation and other improvements for 16 Bombardier light-rail vehicles. The company, which submitted its proposal almost a year ago, was the lone bidder. The 8-5 vote and related discussion was unusually tense for the council, which oversees Metro Transit. The decision came after the union representing light-rail mechanics insisted that its members could do the work in Minnesota.
- New York AG seeks Trump's testimony in civil probe: New York's attorney general is [seeking former President Donald Trump's testimony in an ongoing civil investigation]( into his business practices, a person familiar with the matter said. Attorney General Letitia James' office has requested that Trump sit for a deposition on Jan. 7, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.
