Oct. 16, 1992: Chris Nisan, center, a community activist and Socialist Workers Party candidate for U.S. Congress, objected to police presence at a news conference held by United for Peace and the Urban League at The City Inc., in north Minneapolis. Nisan accused city officials of inadequately investigating homicides of young black men on the north side, while giving a "blank check" to investigate the murder of Minneapolis police officer Jerry Haaf, who was shot in the back at a pizza restaurant on E. Lake Street several weeks earlier. Leaders from both groups talked with police in the room behind Nisan, but the press was not allowed in. Four men were eventually convicted in Haaf's killing.
