Nationwide, six in seven people with a mortgage have an interest rate below 6.46%, according to Redfin. This has created an unprecedented number of “rate-locked” homeowners who don’t earn enough to comfortably afford a mortgage at a higher rate, making them feel obligated to stay in their current home. This huge pool of rate-locked homeowners has been blamed for stifling home sales by limiting the number of listings on the market, boosting prices at a time of high demand, business reporter Jim Buchta writes. Rates are expected to continue to decline, potentially opening up more opportunities for new buyers looking for that elusive starter home. In a new statewide survey, nearly 80% of nonprofits reported that they have less than 12 months before they face financial distress.
