We here at the Star Tribune published no fewer than 10 — yes, 10 — articles on Tim Walz in the 24 hours after Vice President Kamala Harris announced she had chosen the Minnesota governor as her running mate. And for good reason. Almost immediately upon the news breaking, my phone was buzzing with inquiries from Texas to Washington state asking: Who is this guy? And what should I know about him? My stock answer: The man did not eat lunch when he signed the free school meals bill. I know because I asked him. The stories linked below should provide you with everything you need to know when friends and relatives make similar inquiries in your DMs, IMs and text messages. He drinks three Diet Mountain Dews a day. Republicans have slammed him over the $250 million Feeding Our Future fraud happening under his watch. He served as Mankato High's first Gay-Straight Alliance Club adviser while he coached the football team there. We have no shortage of Walz trivia for you to impart to everyone you know. As for the future, we're watching how today's Harris-Walz rally in Wisconsin will unfold. Feel free to forward that story, linked below, and the rest of our coverage to your friends and family. Animales finds a permanent home The vaunted Animales food trucks finally have a permanent home. Jon Wipfli and his crew are moving into a 13,000-square-foot site west of downtown Minneapolis that previously hosted a distillery. The barbecue joint will seat about 300 people, plus another 125 on the patio. Beef and burgers will, of course, be front and center. Star Tribune front page via Newspapers.com It's been more than 40 years since a Minnesotan held the second-highest office in the land. And with Gov. Tim Walz tapped as the Democratic pick for vice president, we decided to jump into the archives to look up how the Star Tribune covered the 1976 election, where Walter Mondale joined Jimmy Carter en route to the Oval Office. The most striking detail, as you can see in Finlay Lewis' conversation with Hubert Humphrey, is how the former vice president opined on Mondale's win while he was sick in bed. And while he was running his own Senate re-election, no less. Fun fact: Humphrey held both of Minnesota's Senate seats at various points in his life. If past is prologue, a Minnesota man on the presidential ticket bodes well for the party heading into November. It also spells disaster for Walz should he ever run for president himself. La Jefa has crowned no fewer than four of our good friends, herself included, as Midwest princesses after Chappell Roan began taking over Spotify playlists across the country. And now it appears the Harris-Walz campaign is riding that wave of royal vibes as it's launched a piece of merchandise that capitalizes on the "Hot To Go!" singer's sudden rise to fame. Walz also happens to don a camo cap in many public appearances. Walz's appointment as Harris' running mate has similarly thrust the North Star State into the national spotlight. And it means that you — yes, you! — must be as unabashedly Minnesotan as possible in public. Tell all of your out-of-state friends and social media followers about the great Halloween Blizzard of '91. Share your Tater Tot hot dish recipe. School them on the proper usage of "ope," "uff da" and subtle Minnesotan insults like "oh, that's different." Your time has come. Bask in it. Or cozy up at home and wait until it all blows over. We're pretty good at that, too.
