President Biden announced Sunday that he's dropping his re-election bid nearly a month after a disastrous debate performance raised concerns among Democrats about his ability to challenge former President Donald Trump. The president made his announcement with a letter he posted to X shortly before 1 p.m. I was on the treadmill when my wife approached me and pointed to her ear — I was wearing earbuds — and told me the news. I took a quick scan of the gym and most of my fellow Sunday exercisers were also scrolling on their phones, eyebrows raised. [image] Glen Stubbe/Star Tribune Meanwhile, our Star Tribune Sunday crew began tearing up plans for the Monday newspaper and calling Minnesota politicos for reactions. Like most elected Democrats who weighed in on the news, Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith joined Rep. Betty McCollum in endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the top of the ticket. Days earlier, McCollum joined the chorus of Democrats calling for Biden to step down in response to his debate performance. Reps. Ilhan Omar and Dean Phillips also endorsed Harris. Phillips, if you'll remember, was the only elected Democrat to challenge Biden during the primaries, bringing the president's age into question during the campaign. So, what's next? The Democrats will hold their convention in Chicago in about a month, where the party's eventual nominee will become official. Until then, rumors are swirling over who Harris will choose as her running mate — she's largely favored to take the top of the ticket as several Democrats have come out to endorse her. Gov. Tim Walz, who endorsed Harris this morning, is among the names being floated as a possible vice presidential pick, along with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper. Related coverage - [Gov.
