MINNESOTA Good morning, Minnesota! I saw two fireflies last night on Summit Avenue in St. Paul. When you get really into itineraries. Up until recently, my trip-planning consisted of carefully curating a playlist that would last the length of the drive to my destination and ... that's it. Maybe I'd ask friends and colleagues for a restaurant recommendation or two. This is why I'm forever grateful for the Star Tribune's Food and Culture team, which reliably churns out guides and reviews for attractions and eateries throughout the Land of 10,000 Lakes. And today's dispatch from up north brings us a ranked list of the Duluth area's best breweries. I've been to the North Shore once in my 2½ years here, and I can't wait to return and try out a few of the places music writer Chris Riemenschneider has on his list. (I visited Castle Danger Brewing in Two Harbors on that trip, for what it's worth.) Ursa Minor Brewing in Superior took the top spot in the roundup, and I know what you're thinking: You just spoiled that carefully curated ranking! Well, I also believe the journey is just as important as the destination — as is the playlist that gets you there — so you'll have to check out Riemenschneider's story in the link below to read the rest. And if you've got recommendations of your own, from North Shore eateries and breweries to tunes for the ol' iPod, email them to us: essential@startribune.com. (Anyone else stoked to hit up the Kidz Bop Live party deck on Labor Day? No? Just me?) But the fairgrounds aren't the only prime outdoor, carnival-esque venue 'round these parts. In 1986, Valleyfair attracted its fair share of heavy hitters, including Roy Orbison and the Judds, pictured above. At one point during their performance, the mother-daughter duo couldn't agree on what to sing next. So mother Naomi polled the crowd. (She won out.) "Mom always has provided the stage presence with her sashaying dances and quick, albeit sometimes cornball, wit," music writer Jon Bream reported at the time. "For instance, after executing a difficult harmony line during the gospel-cum-bluegrass-styled 'Jerusalem,' she said: 'We can do that 'cause we don't smoke cigarettes.'" â
