He was 24. Jackson arrived in Minnesota after a long journey to the NFL. He had quit football and was working at a Harris Teeter grocery store and Chipotle restaurant before returning to the sport. He eventually became a starter at the universities of Alabama and Oregon. His size and tenacity drew the attention of a Vikings team in need of both. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said in a statement Saturday that Jackson's personality "captured every room he was in." "We are devastated by the news of Khyree Jackson's death following an overnight car accident," the Vikings said in a statement. "While we work to gather more information, we have spoken to Khyree's family and offered the support of the Minnesota Vikings." Jackson transferred among several schools before becoming an NFL prospect at Oregon. As he geared up for the upcoming season, our Vikings writer Andrew Krammer had spent weeks on a profile of Jackson set to publish this month ahead of training camp. "There's no way to prepare for such a tragedy, but [@stribsports]( was suddenly, sadly, prepared," sports editor Naila-Jean Meyers said [in a thread on X](. "This article has Khyree Jackson's voice in it. Telling his own story. Please read it." Here's where it happens most. The most likely place for a deer to suddenly jump out in front of a car and cause a crash in Minnesota is just outside of Minneapolis, on Interstate 94 between Maple Grove and St. Cloud. It is one of the state's busiest roads. "When you get just outside the real metro urban area and into the outskirts of Twin Cities, that's where you get this confluence of a having a really high deer density and lots and lots of traffic," a wildlife biologist in Duluth said. The data is part of a map set to be released later this summer that researchers hope will help road engineers identify the most unsafe stretches of road and prioritize where to put up protections.
