Read this in 2 min, 15 sec My alarm goes off at 5:42am. I snooze it once for 10 minutes. Then I snooze it again for 10 more. Ok... time to get up. I brush my teeth. I take a shower. I put on the same pants as yesterday. And I’m out the door. A quick walk to Starbucks, just 2 minutes away. I get in, order the usual drink. A large matcha latte with almond milk (that's my thing). It's now 6:30 AM and I'm ready to get locked in. Laptop open. Headphones on. Press play on the lofi beats. And I get to work. Next thing I know, it’s 8:30am. Damn, that went by fast. I pack up my bag, and head to my 9 to 5. I'm there by 9am, and start my actual work day. For the next hour I daydream about the day when I get to quit this job and go all in on my own thing. My coworkers start streaming in, they're just waking up. But little do they know I've already logged 2 hours of deep work on the business that's going to change my life. –– ^^ That was my routine 5 years ago. When I was a nobody. When I had zero followers, zero revenue, and zero confidence. And when I still had a full time job. And you know what's crazy? That is STILL my routine today. I wake up around 6, prioritize 2 hours of deep work, and then go on with the rest of my day. Deep work changed my life. If it weren't for that deep work, I'm not sure I'd be here today. I will do 2 hours of deep work for the rest of my life - even when I've got enough to buy a private jet! So today, I want to share with you MY 6 rules for deep work. Only keep reading if you’re ready to change your life. [Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date] ^^ this is what deep work looks like (for me) –– Rule #1: Predefined Environment Try to find your deep work spot. The place where you'll go every day. And GET SHIT DONE. This takes the guesswork out of it. It becomes second nature - you already know where to go. For me, it was the Starbucks down the street. Rule #2: Same Time of Day First, let me tell you what doesn’t work: “I’ll do it later, when I have time.” Later almost never comes. Pick a time when you are most focused. Morning. Late night. Doesn’t matter. But it is important to turn it into a habit: "I brush your teeth every night at 10pm in the bathroom." "I go the gym in the morning every day at 6AM." So fill in the blanks: "I do two hours of deep work every day at [TIMEOFDAY] from [LOCATION]." Rule #3: At least 2 hours I need at least 2 hours to get in the zone (6:30-8:30am) Anything less is too rushed. Anything more, I get a little tired. It might be more or less for you. But pick the same amount of time each day. Which brings me to… Rule #4: Daily This is the hard one. It’s easy to skip. It’s easy to cheat. It’s easy to feed yourself an excuse. But daily is the way. Rule #5: No Distractions This is the second hardest one. Facebook. Twitter. Emails. These are all SO tempting! Pick a website blocker. Block your favorite sites. Then get to work. And lastly... Rule #6: Prioritize THE most important tasks Keep a list of tasks that move the needle. I used sticky notes for each individual task I needed to do. It helped me break down bigger objectives into atomic units of work. When I was done, I moved onto the next one. And in the end, I had piles and piles of sticky notes. Small signs of progress. [Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date] –– Deep work is the only thing that’s ever worked for me. We live in a world full of SO much distraction. Carving out time to focus is your secret weapon. Do this, and you'll be ahead of 99% of the rest of the world. It’s the one thing you can 100% control. Every month inside our [Starter Story]( community, we take on the Deep 30 challenge. It's our private accountability service that helps you stay on track to building a business that will change your life. Deep work Every day 30 days We keep you accountable and on track every single day. Last month, we had someone land their first 50 newsletter subscribers. We had another person sell $10K of their product (when their BHAG was $5K). And one time someone did over $100K in sales... in ONE MONTH! Deep work WORKS. And I want you to be part of it.
