[Stansberry Digest] [Sign up to hear Dan Ferris' new warning](... A unique take and actionable wisdom... What to do when everything is changing... Dave Lashmet on fire, science, and medicine... The bomb guys versus the biologists... Microscopic martyrdom... --------------------------------------------------------------- We won't 'bury the lead' today... Our colleague, friend, and regular Friday Digest essayist Dan Ferris is putting the finishing touches on a brand-new video presentation that you won't want to miss. It goes live at 8 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow night. You may have seen a few e-mails about this event already, but I (Corey McLaughlin) want to make sure everyone is aware... Tomorrow night, Dan is going on camera to share a warning about a major market event that he says could change everything you know about investing. Yes, everything. And he'll recommend what exactly to do about that. Tuning into the event will be worth the time, and it's free. No matter whether you're bearish on the markets and the world today or you're getting itchy bullish buying fingers like it seems some folks are this week, I expect you'll be enlightened, informed, and entertained by Dan's take. I can't give away too much today, but if you're wondering what the markets could really look like for the next 10 or 20 years... well, just know that Dan has an informed, unique, and timely view you won't hear from any mainstream source or anywhere else. And, importantly, Dan also has actionable suggestions for how to position your investment portfolio for protection and gains ahead of a stretch of potential financial upheaval he believes 99% of investors won't see coming... You'll hear about all of that – and more – during the presentation. Even if you are familiar with Dan's views, we urge you to tune in... If you've been following along the Digest this year, you're likely familiar with Dan's most recent views on the markets. He writes to you most Fridays, after all, as only he can – with honesty, and a blend of appreciation for history and how it applies to the present. Prepare, don't predict, he says. It's a mantra that works... And it can be comforting when it feels like the world as we've known it is breaking down around us... and everything we knew about investing or anything at all is changing all at once. To this point, specifically, you might know that Dan has been saying that folks should prepare for an era of investing that won't look anything like the last several decades. In my opinion, his view is one that anyone with money in the markets should consider today. And tomorrow, Dan will expand on his views – on camera. This is a chance to watch him deliver a passionate message about the markets and why millions of folks' retirements could be in danger in the years ahead. A lot of people might not know this, but Dan is actually the longest-tenured analyst at Stansberry Research. In the presentation, you'll hear some free wisdom rooted in his 20-plus years as a market analyst... plus the names of two popular stocks you may own that he says you need to sell immediately. I did my best not to bury the lead today, but if I did, here's the important part again... So check out Dan's presentation tomorrow night... And [sign up for free here](. I should note that Stansberry Alliance members and existing subscribers to Dan's Extreme Value newsletter already have access to his work, of course, including the opportunities he will be sharing with a wider audience. But like I said, anyone with money in the markets today could get something out of this presentation... We just ask that anyone who is interested signs up in advance so they don't miss a minute. You can do that for free [here](. When you do, you'll also have the chance to access a new free report from Dan ahead of tomorrow night's presentation. To close things out today, our friend Dave Lashmet is back... Coincidentally, Dave – editor of Stansberry Venture Technology – just joined Dan for an interview on the latest episode of the Stansberry Investor Hour. They talked about the latest developments in cancer treatment that Dave has been writing about lately. You can catch the interview [here](... You'll also hear me join Dan for his opening "rant" on the weekly podcast. But that's not why I'm mentioning this episode... I bring it up because it's another opportunity to hear directly from one of our editors with a world of wisdom. Dave is one of the most forward-thinking folks I've ever come across, and he's still the only person I know who had a correct warning back in February 2020 about how bad COVID-19 could be... Today, he put together the following report exclusively for Digest readers. When I first read a draft of this, it taught me more about cells than I've learned in the past few decades... And I think you'll find Dave explains a complicated topic (cancer treatment) in a simple way. He takes things from here... In 2003, my house caught fire... I (Dave Lashmet) found out while I was in town shopping. The staff flagged me down and said my wife was on the phone. "Everybody's fine," she said, "but you need to come home now. Like, now..." Barreling home in my car, I passed a fire truck in my driveway, then another... I stopped counting at five. But everyone was fine. We had a kitchen fire. But fortunately, the sprinklers in the house went off. And sprinklers work. But they also went off everywhere else in the house, so they soaked everything... And we had smoke damage and needed a new kitchen. Still, the take-home message to me was that sprinklers work... How? Simply put, a chunk of red wax plugs up a sprinkler head... If that wax melts from heat, the water surges forth. Outcomes can vary by sprinkler system, but in the case of our house and this fire, all the heads blew – just to be sure. I can't say much more about sprinkler systems. My dad was a fireman, but I was a college kid, then more college, then more college. Today I study technology, science, and medicine, for investors. I only mention this because it's a good organizing principle for what follows... What's more, I'll share a hidden connection between sprinkler heads and cancer treatments, which I've been researching and writing about lately. First, let's talk technology... At the same time my kitchen was smoldering in the rural Pacific Northwest, researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico were making progress on the cutting edge of technology. The lab is probably most famously (or infamously) the former site of the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort to develop the first atomic bomb. Today, world-class research still happens at the lab. It's one of the largest science and engineering research centers in the country (and part of a national park that U.S. citizens can tour). Here's a picture of the technology I want to talk about, at Los Alamos back in 2003... This is an Advanced Simulation and Computing ("ASC") system, specifically ASCI Q, a $215 million project that was completed in 2003, to build – at the time – the fastest computer in the world. It could do 13 quadrillion math problems per second. Practically, this computer system was designed to do nuclear-weapons simulations. But, importantly, there was also a "stretch goal" that ASCI Q could help figure out how proteins work. Proteins are the "building blocks" of human life, from a scientific view. They're found everywhere in the human body: inside our bones, blood, and muscles... Every living cell is built with proteins. At the time in 2003, this was the only computer in the world that could begin to unravel the mysteries of proteins – and the bomb guys kept fighting the biologists for time on the big machine. So progress was slow. Still, it was an awesome "Big Iron" achievement... ASCI Q covered 45,000 square feet, with 204 miles of wires in the floor connecting the cabinets. From ceiling to subfloor, ASCI Q took up 500,000 cubic feet. That was then, this is now... Computer chips are still a rapidly improving technology. For decades, a sustained rate of improvement has let us produce twice as many transistors per square inch every 18 months. Given enough time, all these doublings add up. Literally, this building-size computational powerhouse at Los Alamos can fit inside a high-end gaming laptop – with the same computing capability. Turns out, the time required was less than two decades. The laptop we use for our research has an Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics card – plus a logic chip from AMD. But the Nvidia graphics card alone has as much processing power as the 2003 ASCI Q mainframe. Literally, at our fingertips every day, we have the same level of computing that the world's top protein chemists were dying to get their hands on 20 years ago. And this, of course, lets us study proteins... So that brings us to the science part of today's discussion... Specifically, biology... Lately, in our Stansberry Venture Technology publication, my team and I have looked at [the proteins that matter for fever]( – what's called your "heat shock proteins." Inside every cell, these act like a sprinkler head... If they get too hot, they melt and break. In fact, they can then unzip a cell's wall from the inside to let all the water from outside the cell wash through. This action also sends danger signals to your immune system – and we need this during a fever. See, if you have a viral infection, it means you have viruses inside your cells, taking over the protein factories to make more copies of the virus. Your cells become enslaved to the virus. That's why each cell in your body can commit suicide... A cell will sacrifice itself to save all the other cells. It's microscopic martyrdom, and it happens all the time. It's part of the body's repair cycle. Meanwhile, viruses are selfish. They don't want to make one or two copies of themselves. They want to make infinite copies. So they steal energy from you – as much as they can – to fuel your protein factories. Inevitably, this heats up these virus-infected cells. So, when you run a fever, you're trying to drive these captured cells over the thermal threshold, so that they commit suicide – and kill the budding viruses, too. All of this is pretty new science... The exact mechanism is called "pyroptosis" – heat-based cell suicide. It turns out, the key pyroptosis protein that scientists have identified and labeled as Heat Shock Protein 70 – which normally exists as a two-protein pair. If this pair splits up, then the heat shock protein can unzip a cell wall, the danger signals leak out, and your immune system rushes in to see what caused the fire... more or less like the firemen in my kitchen. "Right," you might say, "That's some fine science. But it hasn't made me any money." Here we move to the 'medicine' part of the story... It's not the medicine of infections that matters. Instead, we are tracking cancer. As I have mentioned recently, starting next week, a gaggle of doctors will meet at a big-time radiology conference to review a new approach to treating cancer... It is a therapy that can kill cancer cells, but not normal cells. Based on the research my team and I have conducted, the answer is Heat Shock Protein 70 – the same protein that we just illustrated for you. That's because cancer cells are also greedy. Like viruses, they want to make infinite copies of themselves. This means cancer cells also run hot with their protein factories at full blast. And normally, the only limit they face is to not exceed about 111 Fahrenheit. That's when the sprinklers go off. So a successful cancer cell runs at just under 111 degrees... That's just below the limit when a cell will shred itself, inform the immune system of its faults, and call in the firefighters (in this case, your white blood cells). That brings us to the experimental therapy. I'll tell you right now it's called "FLASH radiotherapy." It delivers the same dose as traditional radiation for cancer, but a thousand times faster. Basically, all the radiation courses in a single wave. Now, look back at the red bits in the illustration of the proteins above... Those are sulfur bonds, which are radio-sensitive. Based on our research, we think that wave breaks apart the pair of Heat Shock Protein 70s, setting off your sprinkler system. That's why FLASH radiotherapy can kill cancer cells but leave normal cells alone. In fact, FLASH doesn't seem to have many side effects. Plus, we suspect, it works in conjunction with your immune system. We already know that FLASH works in animals, and we know it worked in at least one human patient. We are about to see the first small-scale trial in people, and we also know that a midstage trial has won approval. But no one in the radiation oncology field studies how fever makes us healthier. Not many people study pyroptosis, and no one else has put all this together using a gaming laptop and some cutting-edge software. This brings us to Part Four, part of the story for investors... Typically, we don't pick drugs or technologies when we haven't even seen Phase 1 human data. That's usually a recipe for investment disaster – this only works about 3% of the time. If you don't have something to tip the scales in your favor, the odds are 33 to 1 against. But this time, we know something Wall Street doesn't – because we have physicists and protein chemists on our team. And we can use cutting-edge tools to predict success. So we have an opportunity. No, we aren't running our own mouse experiments or clinical trials. But computers have doubled so many times that what was once the fastest computer on the planet – a $215 million marvel at Los Alamos – now sits on my desk. We can see how the sprinkler protein works. And we can predict what it does when you hit it with radiation. Again, we know that FLASH works in animals and in one person. We think more people can benefit. Indeed, as a speculation, it might work in lots of solid tumors – maybe surface tumors, maybe deep tumors, maybe even brain tumors. But the secret isn't FLASH. The secret is why we run fevers. If you know how a sprinkler head works in a fire-suppression system, you are halfway there. The rest takes you through some technology, science, and medicine, to leave you at this point, as an investor... If FLASH works like we expect, it could revolutionize cancer treatment. About 600,000 Americans are expected to die of cancer in 2022. If FLASH technology can reduce this number, having exposure to the companies directly involved in this meeting of technology, science, and medicine would be a gold mine for early investors who know where to look. In my recent talk with our Stansberry NewsWire editor C. Scott Garliss, I share more details... We talk more about the cutting-edge research happening right now... and, practically, the companies we've identified that could deliver potential outsized returns if this groundbreaking story plays out how I believe it can. We have feedback on [Scott Galloway's guest Digest yesterday](... more thoughts on Medicare Advantage ("MA") plans... and more about Dan's latest Friday essay... Do you have a comment or question? As always, e-mail us at feedback@stansberryresearch.com. "Keenly written [essay by Scott Galloway yesterday]. Fine insights. And then he states 'oil has destroyed the planet'. And all of what he said, how he said it... LOST. Wrong. Deadly wrong." – Paid-up subscriber Thomas H. "I spent 44 years working in healthcare, with 40 of those years as a hospital CFO, so I have a unique perspective on the healthcare system. "If someone is considering a MA plan, they need to understand all of the differences between standard Medicare and the MA plan that they are considering. MA's do provide some additional benefits beyond standard Medicare but they do NOT cover all of the services that standard Medicare provides. "A big example is post hospitalization coverage in a nursing home or rehab facility for patients who are not strong enough to live at home when they no longer need acute care. A constant challenge for our Discharge Planners were the MA patients who needed sub-acute care post discharge, but had no idea that their Medicare plan did not cover it. "Because of my experience I enrolled in standard Medicare and purchased a high quality Medigap plan (USAA). In October 2020 I became ill with covid and nearly died. Over the next 18 months, I spent more than 12 months in acute care hospitals, LTACH's (long term acute care hospitals), rehab hospitals and nursing homes! Except for the last two months of nursing home care (which was extremely expensive) the cost of my care was paid for by Medicare and USAA. The cost of that care would likely have bankrupted me without that coverage. Praise God that He spared my life!" – Stansberry Alliance member Charles S. "THANK YOU MR. FERRIS! A breath of fresh air. I applaud your willingness to so eloquently, bluntly, and accurately call out the charlatans that claim to be the righteous governors of our wealth. I am, and have been for many years, putting my money on Stansberry. I might add, with much better results than Ms. Wood. Rock on!" – Paid-up subscriber T.M. "While I admire Dan Ferris' long track record and investing philosophy I strongly believe there is no place in Stansberry newsletters for such an ill-informed personal attack on a Cathie Wood and Ark. She has a long term strategy and will ultimately be judged at the end of the 2020's, not based on a few years of moonshot gains followed by massive declines as risk on mentality returned. "I totally agree with the need to be widely diversified but that does not preclude a small portion being invested as an asymmetric bet in innovative stocks with no current profits but potentially lucrative long term returns. I do not own ARKK but do own some of the same stocks and I do listen to her monthly economic overview which I find to be very informative, often being the first to recognize subtle changes in economic trends such as excessive built up in inventories. "I will still listen to Dan's crash broadcast [this] week with an open mind." – Paid-up subscriber Adrian N. All the best, Corey McLaughlin and Dave Lashmet
