Building Your Collection  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ As the Head of Sotheby’s Global Luxury Division, I’m responsible for our categories outside of the worlds of fine art and furniture. Essentially, its anything you can drive, drink or wear: from Patek to Petrus, Hammerle jewels to Hermès, Ferrari to football jerseys (Tom Brady’s [in this case]()…we even occasionally sell the odd dinosaur. This month, I’m starting a newsletter to share what I’m most excited about. And at the moment, wine is top of mind. This has been a transformational year for wine at Sotheby’s. We’ve added exciting new talent to the team: Nick Pegna (a seasoned, international executive who spent 23 extraordinary years at Berry Bros & Rudd) now leads the entire wine & spirits division, and Vanessa Conlin (a brilliant and charismatic Master of Wine) heads up our global retail program. We’ve opened a new location in Zurich, [The Salon at Bucherer](, which has a purpose-built caveau offering world-class wines for instant purchase. And we’ve continued to expand our relationships working directly with producers like Ornellaia, Masseto, Bowmore and many more. Now, in the home stretch of the year, we’re presenting two very special sales that capture the beginning and the end of a wine collecting journey. The first is the 163rd edition of the [Hospices de Beaune]( charity auction – an opportunity to buy your own barrel of 2023-vintage Burgundy and let it mature. The second is, without exaggeration, the most important single-owner wine collection ever to come to market – a series of dedicates sales beginning on the 24th November from the great collector [Pierre Chen](, who has enjoyed a lifetime of wine and is ready to share his cellar with the world. He, too, is a Burgundy enthusiast. So this month is a wonderful time for lovers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Barrel to Bottle At the Hospices de Beaune sale, held on the 19th November in the heart of Burgundy, we’ll present 51 different cuvées direct from the producers. It’s a total of 574 barrels of red wines and 179 barrels of white, a special opportunity to go on the journey with your wine from barrel to bottle. You even get to make your own label. If you’ve ever joined us in Beaune, you’ll recall the wonderful sense of community – wine lovers coming together for dinners and spending time with the producers. French wine country is a magical place. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Burgundian vineyards await. A Wine Festival We continue the celebration of wine 4 days later in Hong Kong with the first sale from The Epicurean’s Atlas – Wines from the Legendary Cellar of Pierre Chen. Unlike the Hospice, where the wine has not yet reached the bottle, the three-day festival in Hong Kong will present over 1,500 lots showcasing some of the finest wines from the best producers that has been made in the past 50 years. Buy Now On top of our auctions, we’re building out a superb assortment of wines available to buy at retail. And one of the great privileges of my job is getting to try some of what we offer. Since we’re on the topic of Burgundy, I’d like to recommend one in particular: Domaine Ramonet’s elegant Bâtard-Montrachet. Even among the echelon of top Burgundy producers, Ramonet exists in rarefied air – and the Bâtard-Montrachet is second to none. It’s silken and voluptuous, with flavors of honeyed apricots and baked apples. You might also taste some toasted hazelnuts, buttered brioche, and vanilla. Perfect for cool autumn nights. We have the 2017 vintage available in Zurich. The 2019 is in our New York retail location. Or you can shop with us [online]( and have it shipped to your door. Learn More Whether you’re gearing up to join us in Beaune, Hong Kong or following along at home, I invite you to watch these two terrific short films we’ve made. Firstly, with chief winemaker Ludivine Griveau, who explains what makes her terroir so special: And finally, with Pierre Chen, which gives a flavor for the collection and the intersection of food, wine and culture: From our auctions to our stores to our [holiday gifting suggestions](, we’re very proud of the wine and spirits portfolio we’re building. We hope you’ll turn to Sotheby’s whenever you’re looking to build your collection – or are simply feeling thirsty.
