And this season’s New York Sales, which run May 13 to 16, offer a true bounty. Half of the works in our Contemporary and Modern Evening Sales have never been at auction before, with the first ever Evening Sale appearances by Jeffrey Gibson (just following his landmark presentation at the Venice Biennale) and the late Faith Ringgold (who died last month at age 93). Once again the majority of offerings in The Now sale are by women, a running theme since we first introduced the sale concept in fall 2021. The amazing women artists featured this season include Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Cecily Brown, Christina Quarles, and more. Only one work in The Now has previously appeared at auction, so we’re elated to share these pictures for the first time. And we can’t forget the classics. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Impressionism and the 100th anniversary of Surrealism, and highlights such as the Monet of the season – a haystack painting from 1893 – and Leonora Carrington’s defining masterpiece Les Distractions de Dagobert, commemorate this moment. This season’s sales are an eclectic gathering of the very best at all levels of the market. With exhibitions now open in our York Avenue galleries, I’d like to share a few of my personal favorites. [Frank Stella](~/AAQRxQA~/RgRoG6flP0RiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc290aGVieXMuY29tL2VuL2J1eS9hdWN0aW9uLzIwMjQvY29udGVtcG9yYXJ5LWV2ZW5pbmctYXVjdGlvbi9pZmFmYS1pP2xpZD1zdzE4c2pjYm51MmlXA3NwY0IKZjPlIjlmyAIMd1IbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAL-) In the same collection since the year of its execution, this 1964 work embodies the seismic shift in 20th century art. Spanning more than 11 feet in length, its monumentality lies not only in its size, and its mesmerizing golden hue but in how it embodies the late artist at the height of his powers. It’s one of only nine masterworks where Stella introduced the V-shaped canvas, destabilizing the supremacy of the rectilinear canvas and challenging painting’s physical limitations. [Édouard Manet](~/AAQRxQA~/RgRoG6flP0RyaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc290aGVieXMuY29tL2VuL2J1eS9hdWN0aW9uLzIwMjQvbW9kZXJuLWV2ZW5pbmctYXVjdGlvbi92YXNlLWRlLWZsZXVycy1yb3Nlcy1ldC1saWxhcz9saWQ9Ymc3cXgxbGtmZDJnVwNzcGNCCmYz5SI5ZsgCDHdSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkwQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAC_g~~) The provenance of this late work by Manet is as illustrious as the artist himself. It was first owned by Eugène Pertuiset, who was one of the artist’s most active still-life collectors and acquired the work the year it was painted. It then entered the collection of the celebrated French opera singer Jean-Baptiste Faure, who owned nearly 70 paintings by Manet. Works by Manet are quite rare to market, especially the artist’s prized still lifes. The last still life by Manet to appear at auction was more than five years ago, so this is an opportunity not to miss. [Morris Louis](~/AAQRxQA~/RgRoG6flP0RnaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc290aGVieXMuY29tL2VuL2J1eS9hdWN0aW9uLzIwMjQvY29udGVtcG9yYXJ5LWRheS1hdWN0aW9uLTMvc3BsaXQtc3BlY3RydW0_bGlkPWs5eXZkOG5oNHMwdlcDc3BjQgpmM-UiOWbIAgx3Uht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAv4~) Sold to benefit The Walker Art Center, this gorgeous late work is actually one of the earliest examples of his Stripe paintings, which he created from 1961 until his untimely passing the following year. Similar compositions are held in the Guggenheim, the MoCA, and the Phillips Collection – a testament to its significance within his body of work. Our marquee week begins with The Now and Contemporary auctions on May 13 and 14, followed by the Modern auctions on May 15 and 16. I hope to see you there. Sincerely, Brooke M. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
