Consider coming to Stony Brook for a two-day experience, July 10-11. SUMMER ACADEMY TO OFFER IMMERSIVE DIP INTO DEEPER SOJO GRANT COVERS TRAVEL AND EXPENSES FOR EDUCATORS After a year’s hiatus, Solutions Journalism Network’s Educators Academy will be back in action this summer. Long Island awaits! [The conference]( will be held on Stony Brook's Long Island campus, July 10-11. The academy is open to journalism educators interested in learning or deepening their experience in teaching solutions journalism. SJN is providing funding to full-time instructors who now teach solutions journalism or have plans to do so. With a special emphasis on reporting about the youth mental health crisis on campus and beyond, the academy will cover teaching solutions journalism framework to inform diverse and inclusive stories and sources; community engagement and interviewing; story structure; creating learning goals and objectives; and refining assignments and instructional activities [Here’s a link to the application.]( In 2022, Stony Brook was named one of four regional SoJo hubs from across the nation. Each of the hubs is charged with finding ways to bring together journalists, educators and students to learn about and share resources about how a solutions journalism approach can support education, community engagement and the practice of journalism. “For years, we have been expanding our focus on solutions journalism and integrating the approach into our courses and curricula at the SoCJ,” said Laura Lindenfeld, dean of the SoCJ and executive director of the Alda Center for Communicating Science. “It will be wonderful to share what we have learned, and hear from others, about what more we can do as educators to help future journalists and media professionals help bring together people and communities to work together to address different local challenges and problems.” Questions? DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR STUDENT MEDIA CHALLENGE SJN heeded the call to provide some additional time for educators, faculty advisers, student newsroom leaders to apply for the 2024-25 [Student Media Challenge.]( The application deadline is now Friday, March 15. Eight journalism schools or student media organizations will spend an academic year (September 2024-May 2025) immersed in a cohort experience attuned to solutions journalism. To get a real sense of what can and does happen during the cohort year, check out [this recently released video]( what University of Georgia students accomplished during the first Challenge year in 2022-23. Each Challenge finalist will receive $7,500 to defray costs to pursue reporting projects on America's mental health crisis.
