1. Game 5: The shorthanded Jets continue their freefall
Vincent Carchietta/USA Today
CARDINALS 30, JETS 10 -- A weekend for the Jets that started [with a COVID scare]( ended yesterday with a listless loss to the Cardinals, who grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and never came close to losing it.
The 0-5 Jets are now off to their worst start since 1996, when they finished the season 1-15.
- "If you were there day in and day out and saw how those guys practiced last week, you wouldn't know what our record was," [said]( Adam Gase after the game.
Three more things:
- Joe Flacco was pedestrian in his first start in New York: 18-of-33, 195 yards, one TD.
- Jamison Crowder was not. He had eight catches, 116 yards and [one TD](.
- Le'Veon Bell played for the first time since Week 1. He rushed 13 times for 60 yards.
Also: Arizona's win was their first on the road against the Jets [since 1975]( when the Cardinals were still in St. Louis and the Jets still played at Shea Stadium.
PS ... The Patriots game being postponed impacted the Jets' schedule. [Here's how](.

DAILY TRIVIA
Whitey Ford is the Yankees' franchise leader in wins (236). Two others have 200-plus.
Who are they?
Hint: One modern, one not.
2. The New York baseball season, by the numbers
Orlando Ramirez/USA Today
Mike Brosseau's heroic home run on Friday night against Aroldis Chapman brought the Yankees' season to an end, making 2020 the Yanks' 11th-straight season without reaching the World Series.
The 2-1 loss also ended perhaps the strangest baseball season ever in New York.
Here's a by-the-numbers look at a most unusual 2o2o.
1 COVID Case
Between the Mets and Yankees players, there was one confirmed in-season COVID-19 case ([Tomas Nido]( which postponed a series between the two teams.
10 percent chance
The day before the season started, FanGraphs [gave]( the Yankees a 10 percent shot at the World Series and a 30.1 percent chance at reaching the ALCS. Alas.
127 games
In all, the Yankees and Mets played only 127 games in 2020, easily the lowest number in the teams' combined history.
$109,439,081
The Yankees entered 2020 with a payroll of $109,439,081, highest in the league. (Prorated salaries meant the players didn't make their full amount). The Rays entered with the third-lowest, at $28,290,689.

If all goes to plan, 2021 Opening Day is 172 days from today.

3. Game 5: The Giants were this close to being an NFC East contender
NFL/Twitter
COWBOYS 37, GIANTS 34 -- In a game completely overshadowed by the pall of Dak Prescott's [gruesome second-half ankle injury]( Dallas overcame a 14-point deficit to hand the Giants (0-5) another loss.
GIF'd above: Greg Zuerlein's game-winning kick, which improbably swerved back into good territory. The attempt was made possible by backup Andy Dalton's play in the final minute.
The bad:
- Don't laugh, but: This was a major blown opportunity for the Giants, who would have been within a half game of first place in the NFC East with a win.
- New York led, 17-3, with seven minutes left in the second quarter. They entered halftime losing, 24-20.
- Daniel Jones had a chance to lead a game-winning drive with 1:50 left. Instead, the drive ended with a punt.
The good:
- Evan Engram scored [the first TD]( for the Giants since Week 2 in the first quarter.
- Kyler Fackrell had a [pick-six](.
- New York's 34 points were more than the total of what the team scored in its last three games.
Also: The Giants had a perfectly executed fake field goal for a TD that was negated because of a penalty. Still worth a [watch](.

4. Report: 'No major objections' to Steve Cohen deal
USA Today
According to a Saturday report by Charles Gasparino of Fox Business, "[about a half dozen]( of MLB's owners met recently to discuss Steve Cohen's $2.4 billion bid to buy the Mets.
There were no snags, according to his tweet:
- "I am told no major objections as deal is poised to go before all league owners for final approval."
The final step is for 23 of 29 owners to vote to approve the sale.
As SNY's Andy Martino has [reported]( there is a general expectation that Cohen will get the support he needs.

5. Whitey Ford, native New Yorker and Yankees legend, dies at 91
MLB/YouTube: Whitey Ford picks up a strikeout
Hall of Fame pitcher and lifelong Yankee Whitey Ford died on Thursday night, the Yankees announced on Friday.
- Ford, 91, played all 16 of his seasons with the Yankees, winning 236 games. He made 10 All-Star appearances, won six World Series titles, started 22 World Series games, and had a lifetime ERA of 2.75.
- Perhaps most impressively, he skipped two years from 1951-52 to fight in the Korean War, right after posting a 2.81 ERA as a 21-year-old rookie.
A native New Yorker who went to Aviation High School in Manhattan, Ford was so relevant that he picked up two well-known nicknames (Chairman of the Board, Slick) to go with his first one (Whitey -- his real name was Edward). His passing unfortunately coincides closely with the recent deaths of fellow pitching greats Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson.
