1. Game 19: The Mets overcome their clutch hitting woes
SNY/Twitter
METS 11, NATIONALS 6 -- For one night, at least, the Mets kicked their bad habits on offense, coming back from down 3-0 in the first inning to avoid a third straight loss to the Nationals.
GIF'd above: Brandon Nimmo's home run-robbing catch on Kurt Suzuki in the second inning. Nimmo also hit a home run and finished the night with three hits. His OBP is now up to .438.
Encouraging:
- The Mets, who entered the game hitting .209 with RISP, were 5-for-13 last night in such instances.
- Pete Alonso had three XBHs, including [this]( home run. He's up to a .229 average.
- Dom Smith had two hits -- including [a home run]( -- and drove in three runs.
- Andres Gimenez did [more]( ... [good]( ... things.
Discouraging:
- In his first start since 2017 (he was technically in more of an opener role), Robert Gsellman pitched only two innings and allowed three runs in the first. Seven Mets pitched in all, combining to allow four home runs.
Also: In their first 18 games, the Mets scored two runs in the first inning. Last night, they scored four.

2. Game 18: Clint Frazier makes the most of his chance

YANKEES 6, BRAVES 3 -- The Yankees, with a little help from a new call up, slugged their way to another victory over the Braves.
Encouraging:
- Clint Frazier had a memorable 2020 debut, finishing 3-for-4 with [this]( home run in his first at-bat.
- .400 watch: DJ LeMahieu went 4-for-5, and is now up to .431 through 17 games. "Yeah, he's pretty good," said Aaron Boone.
- After Masahiro Tanaka went four innings and allowed two runs, the bullpen pitched the next five, with Jonathan Holder allowing the only other run.
Discouraging:
- Aaron Judge missed last night's game with lower body tightness. After the game, Boone [said]( they'd reevaluate him in the next 24-48 hours.
Also: Zack Britton picked up his major league-leading seventh save last night.

3. The Islanders score four unanswered to beat the Capitals
NHL/YouTube
ISLANDERS 4, CAPITALS 2 -- Down 2-0 midway through the second period, New York scored the final four goals for a Game 1 victory.
GIF'd above: John Bailey's short-handed go-ahead goal, created by Brock Nelson's hustle.
Other goals:
- Jordan Eberle, 18:57 second period.
- Anders Lee, :51 third period.
- Anthony Beauvillier, 11:55 third period.
FYI: Washington's Nicklas Backstrom [was checked by Lee]( in the early going of the first period and didn't return.
- “It was a late hit on a player who wasn’t expecting it. It was predatory,” said Caps coach Todd Reirden.
Also: Game 1 started late because Bruins-Hurricanes -- which was supposed to be played Tuesday night but started at 11 a.m. Wednesday because the game before (Blue Jackets-Lightning) went into five OTs -- went into double OT itself. The bubble is giving off serious prep basketball Christmas tournament vibes.
Next game: Friday at 8 p.m.

4. 08/13/1963: Dave DeBusschere tosses a complete game
On this day 57 years ago, Knicks legend Dave DeBusschere, pitching for the White Sox, threw a complete game shutout for his third victory of the year.
His final line:
- Nine innings, six hits, three Ks, zero runs.
The backstory: Indeed, DeBusschere briefly played in both the NBA and MLB. He pitched parts of 1962 and '63 for Chicago, and made his NBA debut with Detroit during the 1962-63 season.
The shutout on this day would end up being his best moment as a baseball player, as he pitched only 9.1 more career innings.
His '63 season was impressive though: 84.1 innings pitched, 3.09 ERA, 53 Ks.
In the end, DeBusschere chose to commit to the NBA full-time in 1964. He was traded to the Knicks four years later, where he went on to win two titles and make five All-Star teams.
