Get Today’s New York Sports Here Tweet of the Day --------------------------------------------------------------- 👋 and welcome to The Warm-Up! ICYMI, the Astros stole [some more signs]( this weekend. --------------------------------------------------------------- Today's viewing guide... - Knicks at Rockets, 8 p.m. 🏀 - Magic at Nets, 7:30 p.m. 🏀 - Mets at Nationals, 1 p.m. ⚾ - Pirates at Yankees, 6:35 p.m. ⚾ - Kobe Bryant's Memorial Service, 1 p.m. 😢 Today's word count: 795 words (about six minutes) --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Gerrit Cole's Yankees career starts today Douglas DeFelice/USA Today In a game without any technical meaning, all eyes today in the New York baseball world will be on mega free agent signing Gerrit Cole, who will make his debut with the Yankees at George Steinbrenner Field Monday against the Pirates. For the lifelong Yankees fan -- [with the sign to prove it]( -- it will mark the start of a longtime dream come reality. - “Just putting on the Yankee uniform for the first time, man, I couldn’t believe it. ... I’m telling you, I’m on cloud nine," [Cole told USA Today's Bob Nightengale](. From coming within a game of winning the World Series with Houston to signing a $324 million deal with the Yankees, it's been a surreal half-year for Cole. In case you've forgotten how dominant his 2019 season was, a quick reminder: - Pitchers WAR: 6.9, fifth in MLB - Strikeouts: 326, first in MLB - ERA: 2.50, third in MLB - ERA+: 185, first in MLB - WHIP: .895, first in MLB FYI: If you're reading this, are in Tampa Bay, and somehow aren't already going to the game, tickets as of Sunday night [were only $15](. --------------------------------------------------------------- MONDAY'S PITCHING PROBABLES Mets at Nationals David Peterson Pirates at Yankees Gerrit Cole 2. Report: Chris Kreider is likely to be traded today James Guillory/USA Today The NHL trade deadline is today at 3 p.m., and the biggest and most rumor-involved player is Rangers winger Chris Kreider. - The problem isn't production: Kreider is third on the Rangers in scoring and fourth in points. - Much like the Marcus Morris-Knicks situation, the problem is his impending free agency. - According to [a Sunday night report]( from the New York Post, Kreider and the Rangers have reached a stalemate in terms of a new contract agreement, despite a Post report on Friday suggesting the two sides might reach a deal. From Sunday's report: - "The Rangers would have gone forward with Kreider as part of the rebuild. This was not an automatic recycling of a veteran. This was not a choice to take a step back in order to attempt to take two or three steps forward two or three years down the line. - Instead, the choice by management was not to go seven years on a contract and the choice by Kreider was not to accept six." Kreider has played all eight of his NHL seasons with the Rangers, and was part of their run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Four more weekend items Billy Hurst/USA Today 1. ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The St. Louis BattleHawks easily covered their 9.5-point spread, beating the Guardians on Sunday in XFL's Week 3, 29-9.
