1. Martino: With Beltran and sign-stealing, it's complicated
In a well-reported column yesterday, SNY's Andy Martino delved deeper into the complexities of Carlos Beltran's involvement in the tech-driven sign-stealing scandal that has knocked the MLB off its axis.
On Beltran's job with the Yankees, after retiring as a player:
- A common misconception about Beltran is that, after joining the Yankees' front office in 2019, he told the team about what the Astros were doing.
- According to multiple major league sources, Beltran never said a word to the Yanks about this.
On why the Mets felt they had to move on from Beltran, and why Tuesday's [new report]( was proof they were right:
- The Mets moved on in part because they expected more stories about him to emerge, and that hunch has been proven correct.
On the respect Beltran has earned, and still has:
- Many people around the game maintain a strong affection for Beltran. Even Yankees officials, who have been annoyed about Beltran's role in the Astros' 2017 sign-stealing scheme, have felt that the demonization of their former employee has gone too far.

3. Knicks players in the Slam Dunk Contest, explored
Success for the Knicks has been ... lacking ... in a few different categories since their golden age in the early '70s, but the NBA Slam Dunk Contest has been kind to them.
Since its adoption into All-Star Weekend in 1984, the Knicks have had four winners, tied with the Hawks for most in the league:
- 1989: Kenny "Sky" Walker
- 2006: Nate Robinson
- 2009: Nate Robinson, again
- 2010: Nate Robinson, again
The most memorable dunks among those two:
- [Walker's 360, double-pump dunk](
- [Walker's 360, tomahawk dunk to clinch the win](
- [Robinson's dunk while jumping over Spud Webb](
- [Robinson's dunk while jumping over Dwight Howard](
- [Robinson's self alley-oop 180 dunk](
As for the Nets, they've had three participants in the contest, with no winners. But they can lay claim to perhaps the most iconic dunk contest dunk of them all: [Julius Irving's free-throw line jam]( in the 1976 ABA Dunk Contest.
Plus: Vince Carter's [2000 masterpiece]( was done as a Raptor, but the Nets can sort of claim him.
