Because of the object’s distance from earth and odd trajectory, scientists could only speculate as to its origin and composition. Some theorized it was an asteroid; others thought it a comet -- albeit an unusual type of comet that contained very little dust. Some went so far as to suggest it might be a piece of advanced technology sent here by an extraterrestrial civilization.
