A year ago, astronomers detected a rapidly moving "interstellar object" about a quarter-mile in diameter passing through our solar system. They dubbed the mysterious object -- the first of its kind -- "Oumuamua," which means something like "scout" or "messenger" in Hawaiian.
Because of the objectâs distance from earth and odd trajectory, scientists could only speculate as to its origin and composition. Some theorized it was an asteroid; others thought it a comet -- albeit an unusual type of comet that contained very little dust. Some went so far as to suggest it might be a piece of advanced technology sent here by an extraterrestrial civilization.
