Hi there, We know what you’re thinking. And yeah. The last thing anyone in talent acquisition needs is another vendor newsletter. Your inbox is probably already pretty crowded with a ton of “thought leadership” content that’s just some sort of cover for all the vendors out there trying to pitch you on their product or sell you some solution. We understand TA pros are being asked to do more with less, which means that you probably are too busy actually recruiting for your talent needs today to keep track of all the trends and topics that are shaping tomorrow’s world of work - and the future of hiring. We get it. And we’ve got your back. Here at SmartRecruiters, we spend a ton of time reading hundreds of posts and press releases, consuming countless white papers and research reports, and monitoring coverage from industry influencers and analysts every month so you don’t have to. Welcome to the very first edition of Inside Hiring Success. [Quote of the Month:]()“Simply put: putting our people first and doing the right thing for them will drive continued growth for our business.” - Joe Erlinger, CEO, McDonald’s Marketing Manager SmartRecruiters SPOTLIGHT Remote Control: What Workers Really Think About Going Back to Work “We’ll put Who, What, and Why before Where work happens, whether that be in an office, at a customer site, or in a cafe." - Brett Hyder, President & CPO of Salesforce IN THE NEWS What Employees Are Really Saying About the Future of Remote Work The good news is that there’s finally a light at the end of the COVID tunnel. With vaccination rates soaring and lockdown restrictions being lifted across much of the world, it’s starting to finally feel like things are getting back to normal. For many workers, that return to normalcy also requires returning to the office. The bad news? [A new report from McKinsey]() shows that most employees don’t feel like they have enough information about their employers’ post COVID-19 working arrangements, which the study suggests is the primary cause for a recent spike in employee anxiety and burnout - and that uncertainty is driving top talent to look for answers outside of their own organizations. The potential impact for recruiters and talent professionals is pretty obvious. But while it’s looking like employee flight is inevitable, the truth is it’s not too late for talent organizations to put up a fight. Here’s what workers really think about the future of remote work (and what talent organizations can do to fight flight). TRENDS Talent Acquisition: On Stranger Tides The Great Rehire has begun. For employers everywhere, this means that the talent tides have shifted, and few TA functions have the resources required to effectively compete in what’s become the most competitive hiring landscape we’ve seen in at least two decades. Here’s a roundup of some of the things that employers are already doing to ensure Hiring Success in a market where employer demand is already significantly ahead of talent supply: - Babies Onboard: Denver-based EdTech startup Guild Education announced it would be opening a million-dollar onsite daycare center in order to attract and retain female workers, hoping to reverse the worldwide drop in workforce participation among women by providing incentives eased at lifting the burdens associated with balancing work and family responsibilities. [Read more]() - Want Fries With That? Up to 40% of restaurant and hospitality employers [say they can’t]() find the talent they need to fill the estimated 2.3 million hospitality jobs currently open in the US alone. The answer for one McDonald’s franchise owner is simple: adding extra value to potential applicants by dangling a $50 bonus for simply showing up to an interview. [Read More]() - Trading Desks: Global banking giant HSBC announced that its senior leaders would be swapping their posh offices on the Executive Floor of their Canary Wharf headquarters for hot desks, and reallocating some of London’s most elite commercial real estate for employee meeting rooms and collaborative spaces. [Read more]() - Gen Why: Turns out, most Gen Y workers are hitting the wall even worse than most of us, with many starting to look for new jobs or even new careers after a year of Zoom calls, job insecurity and professional anxiety. Millennials have come of age - and so too the efforts of tech companies to retain this critical workforce segment. [Read here]() INTERNAL RECRUITING Internal Recruiting: Why TA Should Own Employee Mobility Internal recruiting has long ranked as the single biggest source of hire for companies across industries and segments, despite the fact that it’s often overlooked or completely ignored by many recruiting organizations - only about half of employers surveyed by SmartRecruiters even have any sort of formal or structured internal recruiting programs or policies at all, and most who do report having little confidence in their own internal recruiting initiatives (a finding echoed by their own employees). Given the fact that employers report a 20% increase in internal recruiting year over year, and that mobility is directly linked to employee retention, hiring manager satisfaction, and employee engagement (not to mention significant savings in terms of cost per hire and time to fill compared to external recruitment), it’s more important than ever before for companies to reevaluate and reinvent their internal recruitment strategies. That’s why SmartRecruiters has launched the first-ever global Internal Recruiting Awards. We’re looking for some of the most creative, impactful or innovative ways that real companies are making a real impact when it comes to internal recruiting. Nominating a company is easy, and open to any employer, anywhere in the world. We’ve lined up an elite panel of industry influencers and TA leaders to judge all nominations, and every company submitting a nomination will receive feedback about how their program stacks up along with insights and ideas directly from some of the industry’s top experts - whether or not you end up snagging an IRA, it’s a no-lose situation. Which, as every recruiter knows, is pretty rare in the business of talent. Nominations are open through June 19, so submit your nomination here and let us know how you’re putting best practices into practice. WHAT'S NEXT How are European Governments Shaping the Future of Work? No one was surprised when Indeed announced they saw a [50%]() in crease in job listings containing "remote work" since the beginning of the pandemic. Talk to anyone on Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams and you'll find out most colleagues prefer to work from home, or at least go hybrid. Some companies are still waiting to receive the memo that remote work and work/life flexibility are here to stay. However, some European governments are already setting out new initiatives that will support remote employees: - Ireland - "Our Rural Future" titled the Irish government's plan to encourage city-dwellers to reside in rural areas. The plan's largest initiative involves creating a network of 400+ remote working hubs throughout the country. The country's Más País party is leading the initiative which they want to test over a 3 year period. The initial trial period will have around 200 companies participate, and may affect up to 6000 workers. - United Kingdom - British lawmakers are working towards a new addition to the [Employment bill](), which will protect remote workers' right to switch off.
