In leading self or leading others, allowing space for people to shine in areas where they excel just makes sense. But it can be surprisingly difficult to recognize your own strengths. Things that come easily to you may be taken for granted and not seen as a source of excellence. You can also get stuck focusing primarily on addressing weaknesses. So much feedback -- from elementary school teachers to your latest performance review -- focuses primarily on addressing areas for improvement. They sometimes fail to highlight the gifts and talents that are most likely to propel you to excellence. There's a balance to be struck for sure, but focusing on strengths can be a great way to grow.
