Leaders can use a classic psychology tool, Reinforcement Theory, to create a positive culture driven by transparency, rewards for a job well done and continuous feedback that can minimize disruptive behavior, writes leadership professor Ben Laker. "By internalizing and adeptly applying this theory, leaders can transcend traditional management, achieving both short-term goals and leaving a sustainable, long-lasting impact on their teams and organizations," Laker writes. Phrases from the football field that work well in business include "look the ball into your hands," which emphasizes the importance of follow-through, and "calling an audible," which encourages flexibility, leadership consultant Denise Lee Yohn says in this video. In addition, the idea that the offense wins games and the defense wins championships emphasizes the importance of consistency, Yohn notes. Full Story: [SmartBrief/Leadership]( (10/10)

A person's purpose can evolve over time, and Tamron Hall -- the first Black co-host of NBC's Today Show and now the host of her own ABC talk show -- says the best leaders invest in their team, encourage them to pursue their dreams and put their own "skin in the game." Hall adds, "So, if I'm giving you my opinion or my feedback, I am watching it and investing in it -- and the same for the viewers." Full Story: [Success magazine]( (10/2023)

One part of [the Tamron Hall interview]( that jumped out at me was her assertion that our purpose evolves over time as we reinvent ourselves. In that spirit, I've had several careers, including stints in radio, television, newspaper, and newsletter production. I've also spent much of that time with a side job as the leader of a spiritual community. The flavor of leadership differs within each, but as Hall emphasizes, you're challenged to build relationships everywhere you go. There's no job where you can ignore the people around you and be just out for yourself. "Purpose is focus," Hall says. "It's the ability, as a leader, to explain my vision more clearly to my team and live up to the standards in which I put on myself to be the best I can be." To be our best as leaders means we must work to help those around us be their best. If this newsletter helps you, please tell your colleagues, friends or anyone who can benefit.
