The pandemic created an existential crisis around work that can't be solved with the usual tools -- and certainly not by mandating a return to the office or rejiggering other aspects of work without addressing the underlying question of what gives our jobs meaning, says Heidi Brooks, a senior lecturer at Yale School of Management. "We have to learn our way forward, and to be able to discern what of the challenges in front of you are things that you can meet with familiarity and calm and a sense of competence and what are the things that are new, where you don't necessarily know the answer, and yet your leadership, your presence, is still quite central," Brooks says. "So if we insist on holding the frame that leadership is about knowing the answer and solving the problem, we're going to stay confused and in a corner, because we're at a place where we don't know the answers and can't solve all problems in readily available ways." Conflict can be catastrophic on a team, but a good leader can guide the team toward a resolution, executive coach and "The Leadership Gap" author Lolly Daskal writes. To do that, the leader first needs to be observant enough to pick up the cues and proactive enough to step in. Full Story: [Lolly Daskal]( (8/21)

After hitting a physical and mental "rock bottom" at the age of 23, author and financial expert James Whittaker, was determined to develop a growth mindset which led him to excel in the financial and entrepreneurial world and he now teaches his "Win the Day" method of daily positive practices. "We need relationships in our lives to achieve our goals," says Whittaker. "That comes to pass by turning yourself into someone of increasing value, and by giving without the expectation of anything in return." Full Story: [Success magazine]( (8/2023)

The color-changing fish species hogfish have light-sensing skin vision that helps them view not only their environment, but themselves, according to a study in Nature Communications. Analyzing the light-sensing properties of hogfish's skin, researchers found that the skin functions as a sensory feedback tool that allows the fish to observe whether they have changed colors. [The interview with Yale School of Management senior lecturer Heidi Brooks]( is worth your time to read and digest. Especially her advice for leaders to contemplate "the things that other people are experiencing in the organization, including things that I create with my impact, that are enlivening or depleting to people's experience at work." If too much going on that depletes the energy and enthusiasm of your team -- or yourself -- it may be tough to retain your top talent. I invite you to contemplate this question, talk over your thoughts with a trusted advisor and find ways to enact more enlivening experiences for your team.
