Megan Rapinoe, who led the US women's soccer team to the World Cup championship in 2019, says she's a "team first" player and has worked to create several leadership styles to meet teammates where they are and give them the support they need. "[W]e create this environment where everybody feels seen and heard, and everyone feels confident, and everyone feels like they have a place within the team. And if a more senior player can be the one setting that example, then the whole structure and the environment changes within that," Rapinoe says. "I don't need to be the player that's going to yell at everyone. If someone needs that fine ... I just need to know what it is so then we can have that relationship going back and forth."

Effective work communication, and even software code, share many of tai chi's hallmarks -- precision, clarity and relevancy -- since "an ill-considered comment or action can have far-reaching implications," writes software architect Gary Givental. "It's a balance, though; providing too little information can lead to miscommunication and confusion, while overloading with unnecessary details can create information overload and dilute the main points," Givental explains. "It enables me to communicate clearly, avoid misunderstandings, and keep discussions focused and productive," [Givental says](. [] [Does your feedback spigot need a flow restrictor?](
Be judicious when giving negative feedback, because "who likes to be wrong? The ego gets bruised and people often start to question themselves," notes Shari Harley, author of "How to Say Anything to Anyone." If someone gives you too much feedback, regroup by asking, "What's the most important thing I should do?" Full Story: [Candid Culture]( (7/24)

Make sure the feedback is constructive and that the recipient can actually act on it, [Hadley advises](. If not, keep quiet. [] Smarter Strategy

Leaders can regain a sense of balance and creativity by making time for thinking and resting, taking time off and starting the day more leisurely before the task-oriented part of the brain kicks in, writes executive coach Ken Blanchard. "Surprisingly, when we step away from the relentless pursuit of tasks, we're often able to see our vision more clearly and feel newly inspired by it," Blanchard writes. [Photographer accidentally captures "rainbow contrails"]( (Soumyadeep Mukherjee)
Clouds prevented amateur photographer Soumyadeep Mukherje from getting photos of the International Space Station, so he trained his camera on another part of the sky and caught a rare image of so-called "rainbow contrails" coming off of a passing airplane. Such aerodynamic contrails are formed when temperature and air pressure drop around the wings, releasing ice that refracts the sun's light and creates a rainbow of colors. Full Story: [Space]( (7/27)

As the leader of a spiritual community -- as well as your humble editor -- I am what is known in the clergy business as "bi-vocational." Because of this, I usually work seven days a week. While others are off enjoying their weekend, I'm using Saturday to prepare for Sunday, then working most of the day Sunday. Then, it's back in my seat for SmartBrief on Monday. While both of my jobs are rewarding beyond measure, it's exhausting to not have an entire day off from the pressures of a job. I often feel the effects [Ken Blanchard mentions](, including a dip in creativity and productivity. I am taking some of Ken's recommendations to heart though, and am determined to be more deliberate about making time to do nothing in particular, and slowing down my mornings with some meditation and journaling time.
