People in a position of less power on an issue can gain some ground by being uncooperative, as illustrated by workers who go on strike when a powerful company digs its heels in, according to Dartmouth College research that looks at game theory's zero-determinant strategies. "Among the conceptual insights, I like the idea of unbending strategies, behaviors that encourage an extortionate player to eventually settle at a fairer outcome," says mathematician Christian Hilbe, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, who has read the study. The senior pastor of the first church I ever worked for as an associate pastor was a keenly visionary man. The church had owned property in a different part of town but its efforts to construct a new building and get out of a rental situation had stalled. This man had caught the vision of what the church could be and led us on an inspiring and fun fundraising odyssey that resulted in the new building coming together within his first two years heading the church. It was amazing to watch! Though, [as Sunny Bonnell and Ashleigh Hansberger warn](, driven, aspirational leaders can often become abrasive and egotistical at times -- believing in their own hype. My senior pastor was not immune to these temptations, and burned a few bridges with congregational members over this time. I eventually left to form a new spiritual community when my working conditions began to deteriorate. We need visionary leaders, but as leaders, we also need to understand how our obsession with progress can sometimes sour our relationships. It is a double-edged sword, at times.
