Ten companies on the S&P 500 increased the number of women on their boards in May as several men retired from their positions and, for the first time, women now occupy 33.2% of board seats. Former Global CEO for Anthropologie Group and retail industry veteran Hillary Super has been named to succeed Rihanna as CEO of Savage X Fenty, the lingerie brand founded by the singer in 2018. Super, who was named to Forbes' list of 40 women to watch over 40 in 2017, started her career as a buyer for Wet Seal and has since worked for a roster of big retailers including Gap, Ann Taylor and American Eagle Outfitters. The "glass cliff" -- in which women or other leaders from marginalized groups are promoted to CEO to "turn things around" -- is similar to the "glass ceiling," except one blocks advancement, while the other blocks success, since those new leaders are often not given the resources they need, says executive coach Nicole Case. "A lot of the lack of resources that I see in these situations are lack of time -- like they're not giving them enough time to turn things around -- or lack of actual resources--like the dollars, people -- to fix whatever it is," says Case.
