New leaders, whether they attain their job by promotion or as part of a merger or acquisition, should seek to learn all they can from employees and "get comfortable not being the expert in the room," [says Alto Pharmacy CEO Alicia Boler Davis](, and when change is on the horizon, Colleen von Eckartsberg, a partner at Bain & Co., [advises leaders to recognize employees]( for the work they've done to keep them onboard. "Bringing that level of appreciation and respect to what predated you, even if you're going to turn that into what needs to be different going forward, is a very, very powerful trust builder," von Eckartsberg says. [] [Why every leader should hone their storytelling skills](
Every leader should be able to tell two stories -- how you got to be where you are and where you are going, writes Wally Bock, who recommends listening to and collecting the stories of other people and making them your own, giving credit where credit is due. "Try telling the story to a few people to drive it into your memory so that it's available when you need it," Bock writes. Full Story: [Three Star Leadership]( (3/23)

[] [What's the hubbub around TikTok all about?](
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew came under heavy scrutiny from US lawmakers last week concerned over security risks of the platform, specifically that the Chinese communist government could, under their laws, demand data on the more than 150 million US users that TikTok would be required to turn over. Chew tried to assure lawmakers that the data will be housed in US servers, which would put it out of reach of the Chinese government, but skeptical legislators still seem to be moving ever closer to a ban. This article lays out the details on why the US is worried about the data TikTok collects. Full Story: [ABC News]( (3/24)

As CEO of the New York Times, Meredith Kopit Levien says her leading principle is to keep quality journalism front and center while creating a destination where people can be both informed and entertained and be willing to pay for the experience. "If you asked what The New York Time's most ambitious construction in people's lives could be, we would say we're aiming to be the essential subscription for every curious person in the English-speaking world who wants to understand and engage deeply with the world," Kopit Levien says. What has nearly 650,000 LEGO pieces in 22 colors and spans almost an entire wall of an art gallery? That would be a LEGO brick recreation of French Impressionist Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" painting by artist Ai Weiwei, who has worked with the barefoot-biting bricks to make art since 2014. Newly hired, or promoted, leaders often have their own vision for what their company should look like. Some, like the Elon Musks of the world, use the power and force of their will to remake the company in their image, with varying results. Mostly they create a lot of bad will and chaos for the company's existing employees, losing the trust and respect of their workforce along the way. There is another route, though, and that is [to respect and appreciate]( the employees of the company you're now running, or the teams you're now supervising. They have their own processes, skills and culture that new leaders should seek to understand and appreciate, even if they plan to make some changes. Failing to lead with trust and respect can result in "alienating" employees, [says Bain & Co. partner Colleen von Eckartsberg](, which can lead to a "cascade effect" of good employees jumping ship just when a new leader needs them the most.
