Leaders can accomplish more in 2023 by setting a "Mount Shasta Goal," that's big and in the distance, writes Wally Bock, who notes that drivers on California's Interstate 5 can't help but be aware of the mountain's majestic presence everywhere they turn. "If you're serious about hitting your version of my Mount Shasta Goal, you need to check from time to time to evaluate how you're doing," Bock writes. Put it into practice: Determine, each week, what steps you can take to achieve your "Mount Shasta Goal," and take time to measure your progress and adjust your actions as needed. Leaders who seek to inspire their employees and build a culture of trust and safety will see more engagement and productivity among their teams than those who continue to insist on old-fashioned "command and control" forms of leadership, writes Bob Whipple. "The empowerment will return," Whipple writes, "and you will find your current workforce can carry the load without difficulty." Put it into practice: If you're having trouble hiring new employees, a review of your leadership style and culture may be in order, as Whipple notes: "Hiring that is so problematical for command and control groups is a breeze for trust and inspire groups." Creating strong connections with peers -- both inside and outside of your organization -- doesn't have to be hard or intimidating, writes executive coach Elisabeth Owen Hayes, who offers five steps including how to find potential connections, what to say, how to set up meetings and how to foster deeper relationships. "Go into this process with the goal of not only learning from others but also providing assistance, sharing ideas and making introductions," Owen Hayes writes. Put it into practice: Initially, connecting can feel awkward for everyone involved, but by making reaching out part of your leadership routine, you'll soon be meeting people you can learn from and finding ways to be of service to them. Tamp down defensive reactions in tense situations by using "Inquisitive Confrontation" that begins with questioning your own assumptions and conclusions then leading with open-ended questions about what others believe are the best ways to move forward, writes Karen Brown, founder and CEO of Exponential Results. "By engaging with a sense of curiosity and interest, leaders can gain a greater understanding of the thinking that led to a particular action," Brown writes. Put it into practice: This method is particularly effective when questions begin with "what" instead of "why," Brown notes. "Why" questions put "the recipient in a position to have to explain and justify themselves and their actions," Brown adds. Full Story: [Chief Executive]( (1/5)

[] [Achieving a goal depends on motivation and self-esteem](
Achieving a goal -- whether it's personal or work-related -- lies in the strength of motivation that comes from within ourselves and the circumstances around us, as well as the enjoyment we derive from the goal or the pressure we feel to do it, says Anja Van den Broeck, a professor at KU Leuven, Belgium. "Your self-esteem may depend on the activity," says Van den Broeck. Full Story: [BBC]( (1/2)

"Are mermaids real?" and "Is Elon Musk a robot?" are two of the strangest questions British Google searchers asked in 2022, according to an analysis by Top10Casinos. Other odd search entries included: "Why do ducks quack and humans don't?" and "Time machine instructions," which could have come from someone who was clearly ready for a new year to begin. My last real vacation was last year when we took a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and spent a day at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. I'm looking forward to another getaway this year! Where are you spending your time away from the office? [Show us your photos](mailto:candace.chellew@futurenet.com)!

As we look ahead to the second week of the new year, some of our aspirational goals (otherwise known as New Year's resolutions) may already be slipping to the wayside. Starting any new habit -- or breaking old ones -- can be tricky, and most often, we fail. That's why the advice from [Wally Bock]( and [professor Anja Van den Broeck]( can be valuable in this moment. Examining our motivation and where it comes from (within, without or a bit of both) and what kind of big "Mount Shasta Goal" we have set for ourselves can seem daunting, but if we're determined to make this year better, these are exercises worth doing. My main goal this year is to read more and study teachings that will make me a better human being who loves being in service to others and the greater good we can create together. Doing a good job as the editor of this brief is part of that overall larger goal to help each of you reach, and climb, whatever Mount Shasta you're pursuing this year.
