The U.S. Navy holds unseen videos of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) — or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), as the Department of Defense (DOD) prefers to call them — but will not release the footage publicly because it would "harm national security," a Navy spokesperson wrote Wednesday (Sept. 7). The admission came in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the government transparency site The Black Vault, which has previously shared thousands of pages of UFO-related documents received via FOIA requests to the CIA and other government agencies. The Black Vault filed the FOIA request to the U.S. Navy in April 2020 — just one day after the Navy declassified three now-infamous videos shot by Navy pilots showing high-tech aircraft moving in seemingly impossible ways. The Black Vault requested that the Navy now turn over any and all other videos related to UAP. Full Story: [Live Science]( (9/10)

Countless civilizations have risen and fallen over the millennia. But which one is the oldest on record? About 30 years ago, this question seemed to have a straightforward answer. Around 4000 B.C., the earliest phase of the Sumerian culture arose as the oldest civilization in the Mesopotamia region, in what is now mostly Iraq. The Sumerians are named after the ancient city of Sumer, which was a few miles south of the modern city of Kut, in eastern Iraq. Archaeologists call the earliest Sumerian phase the Uruk period, after the equally ancient city of Uruk about 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southwest, where many of the oldest Sumerian artifacts were found. But evidence uncovered in the past few decades indicates that the Sumerians have a few contenders, including ancient Egypt, for the title of "oldest civilization." Full Story: [Live Science]( (9/12)

Our brains are complex and elaborate. They contain billions of neurons, don't fully form until we reach age 25, and can generate around 25 watts of power — enough to illuminate a light bulb. Scientists are constantly learning new information about how the brain functions, but what do we know about how this incredible organ operates during sleep? Is it a total mystery, or are there some things we know for sure? Full Story: [Live Science]( (9/11)

Two newly updated COVID-19 booster shots are now available in the U.S.: one made by Moderna and one made by Pfizer and BioNTech. The Moderna booster is available for people ages 18 and up, and the Pfizer-BioNTech booster can be given to those ages 12 and up. Individuals qualify for a booster if they meet these age requirements and it’s been at least two months since they completed their primary vaccine series or received their last booster shot. Here's everything you need to know about the updated boosters, including what variants they guard against, who's been recommended to get the shots, and when. Full Story: [Live Science]( (9/12)

Scientists have discovered a previously unknown communication pathway that allows fat cells to directly "talk" to the brain — at least in mice. The team visualized these hidden sensory nerve pathways using a technique that made the animals' tissue transparent. When the researchers destroyed the connection, the mice burned more fat. That raises the possibility that disrupting this communication network could one day help treat obesity, assuming the findings could be replicated in humans. Full Story: [Live Science]( (9/12)
