Gap has streamlined its namesake and Banana Republic banners over the past two years and jettisoned smaller brands including Piperlime and Intermix to position the company for growth, CEO Sonia Syngal said at the retailer's annual shareholder meeting. "We also entered into agreements to transition our European business to market share leaders in France, Italy and the UK, which provides us a more capital-efficient model to grow internationally," Syngal said. Women now account for 51% of chief marketing officers, up from 47% in 2020, while individuals from diverse backgrounds have increased from 9% in 2016 to 15% in 2021, according to Spencer Stuart research. The average tenure of all individuals holding the CMO titles remained at a 40-month low last year, however, with industry experts noting CMOs are increasingly charged with enlisting technologies, data and intelligence and operating amid a politically polarized consumer landscape.
