[] [Brene Brown changes her mind about emotions](
Brene Brown has abandoned her long-standing advice on reading and recognizing people's emotions as too difficult and impractical, instead recommending the idea of "story stewardship," which is focused on listening and "building trust by acknowledging, affirming, and believing." Brown cautions that such conversations can go wrong if we feign interest, impose our own perspectives or shut down the discussion when it becomes uncomfortable. Full Story: [Brene Brown]( (12/5)

If you lose your place during a speech or presentation, you can pause, check your notes, repeat the last thing you said or skip ahead -- knowing that the point you needed to make will eventually return, writes Jim Anderson. Hi, it's your SmartBrief on Leadership editor! Thank you for reading and subscribing. I work remotely, I manage remote people in two different states, and my manager is three time zones away. I sit at a desk and type and edit all day. So [my examination of the Great Resignation]( doesn't have the direct perspective of today's customer-facing or industrial jobs. But what I do know is that communication, a sense of purpose and a sense of direction are fairly universal wants, along with a paycheck that relieves the sharp pressures of housing, food and security. Mostly, I know that readers of this newsletter want to do well. And that's the opportunity in all this resigning and quitting -- people might hate work, but they want something better. And you can help create that with them and for them.
If this newsletter helps you, please tell your colleagues, friends or anyone who can benefit. Forward them this email, or [send this link](. What topics do you see in your daily work that I should know about? Do you have praise? Criticism? [Drop me a note.](mailto:jdasilva@smartbrief.com)
