Scammers are taking advantage of coronavirus concerns in numerous ways, in some cases creating fake charities that claim to be raising money for victims but actually are looking to commit identity theft by getting people to tap or click on malware links. Other scams afoot include online stores that purport to sell masks but really are trying to steal credit card information, again for identity theft purposes, and "coronavirus maps," whose senders' goal is to plant malware on the target's computer to steal credentials "for targeting other sites, contacts, financial platforms and even enterprises," writes Zak Doffman. Carnival Corp. says cybercriminals accessed sensitive data of Holland America and Princess Cruises guests and employees, including passport numbers and Social Security numbers. The cruise line did not disclose how many people were affected by the breach, which occurred between April 11 and July 23, but Breach Clarity CEO Jim Van Dyke noted that incidents of this nature "create extraordinary levels of risk" for identity theft. [Most companies' breach plans are lacking, Experian says](
Two-thirds of companies haven't reviewed their data breach plans since preparing them and are also woefully underprepared in other areas, finds a survey by the Ponemon Institute for Experian Data Breach Resolution. Michael Bruemmer of Experian says such breach plans should be reviewed yearly, adding that companies should also examine cloud computing and employee training. [Doctor sentenced for scam involving stolen identities](
Myra Mabry, an obstetrician-gynecologist from Catskill, N.Y., was sentenced to four years and six months in prison plus three years of supervised release after entering a guilty plea to charges of heath care fraud, opioid distribution, obstruction of justice and aggravated identity theft. Mabry admitted to writing numerous prescriptions for hydromorphone, morphine and oxycodone without a legitimate medical purpose and having a co-conspirator fill the prescriptions using patients' identities from 2015 to 2017. An InfoGroup survey of 1,000 individuals revealed 88% of respondents are concerned about their personal data privacy, 65% think it's risky to share personal information and 57% are alarmed "when they see a product they searched for online advertised on social media like Facebook or Twitter."
