[Enable team members instead of helping](
Instead of immediately solving problems, ask people what they've tried and what they think about the challenges they face, writes Dan Rockwell. Only step in when employees have lost sight of the goal, if they are confused or if they face a unique obstacle. [Leadership Freak]( (11/25)

[Ask these 8 questions to groom executive talent](
Great leaders need a strong bench around them, which requires deep thinking about whether candidates have the character, emotional makeup and desire to lead at the highest levels, writes Alaina Love. Former Circuit City CEO Phil Schoonover learned that "mission-critical positions" require people who can get up to speed quickly. [SmartBrief/Leadership]( (11/25)

[Why obsession with the right things matters](
Adopting a "disinterested obsession with something that matters" may be the key to genius, in addition to hard work and natural ability, writes Paul Graham. "In fact, here's an interesting idea that's also rather alarming if it's true: it may be that to do great work, you also have to waste a lot of time," he writes. [Paul Graham blog]( (11/2019)

[Why every great speech requires 2 outlines](
Create two outlines before every speech: a written-out text that helps you prepare and strategize, and a speaking outline that boils the presentation down to talking points, writes Gary Genard. After that, you can refer to your notes while your attention remains on the audience. [The Genard Method]( (11/24)

Remote workers can get to know each other better when meetings are open early, video and sound are on and leaders pause after asking questions, writes Kevin Eikenberry. "It takes longer for people to speak up in a virtual setting than a face-to-face one, and a good facilitator who waits longer will be rewarded with input and comments," he writes. [Set limits as a way to spark creativity](
Constraints in terms of resources, processes and end-result specifications can encourage creativity, but the manager plays a role in communicating that effectively, write business professors Oguz A. Acar, Murat Tarakci and Daan van Knippenberg. "Here, it is important to realize that the same constraint may be interpreted in different ways: as a motivating challenge or as a frustrating roadblock," they write. Time from home. 85% of you spend a decent amount of time working from home. Only a small portion go to the office every day. As an employee, be sure your home environment is conducive to being productive and actively manage staying connected with your office co-workers. It can be easy to leave people off meeting invites or forget to check in with them when they're out of sight. If you're leading a team with remote workers, find ways to involve them in team events and conversations. This takes deliberate effort on your part. Team members who feel disconnected find it easier to "mail it in" and also have less attachment to your organization. This puts them at higher risk for looking for greener pastures elsewhere. -- Mike Figliuolo is managing director of [ThoughtLeaders](. Before launching his own company, he worked at McKinsey & Co., Capital One and Scotts Miracle-Gro. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He's the author of three leadership books: "[One Piece of Paper](," "[Lead Inside the Box](" and "[The Elegant Pitch](."

[At 80, singer Judy Collins is still creating](
At the age of 80, Judy Collins has a new album coming out and says she's working on three more because her passion for artistry "was what provided the incentive to stay on the planet." "The main thing that I've learned, and the advice I give everybody, is to just show up," she says. [The Creative Independent]( (11/25)

[How the Tofurky revolutionized food](
The vegetarian Thanksgiving centerpiece Tofurky has been credited with sparking the development of an entire industry now highlighted by companies such as Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, says Jan Dutkiewicz of Oxford University and Johns Hopkins University. "It gave a lot of people a first taste, literally and conceptually, of meat alternatives," says Dutkiewicz. [Forbes]( (11/24)
