Frieda Caplan got her start in the food industry as the lone woman working in the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market, and built a business by working with chefs and growers to introduce foreign foods like kiwifruit to the American market. Caplan, who was honored with the title of "Produce Man of the Year" in 1979, has handed down Frieda's Specialty Produce to her daughters Karen and and Jackie, and Karen's daughter Alex Berkley.
