Ellen Ochoa, the first Latina to go to space in 1993, says she relies on two pieces of advice from Marine friends to be an effective leader -- accomplish the mission and take care of your people -- adding that "if you do No. 2 well, then your team will take care of No. 1." She praises her teachers with encouraging her to go into STEM at a time when it was a field lacking in diversity, and advises Latinas embarking on a STEM career to be an important part of the team and to work hard.
