Espionage charges have been filed against Chinese intelligence officers and hackers after they allegedly hacked into US aerospace companies and a French firm that was working with a US company to develop airplane engines. The Justice Department indictments involve hacking attempts to steal sensitive aerospace technology between 2010 and 2015 while a Chinese state-owned aerospace company was building a similar aircraft. Cybersecurity firm Symantec reports that the hacking group that used ransomware to shut down Atlanta's computers has focused its attention primarily on US targets. Of the 67 other organizations that have been targeted by SamSam, 56 are in the US, and most are health care organizations, which continue to face ransomware attacks from the "highly active" group. [Funding boost needed to counter cyberbreaches, Kaspersky says](
Eighty-four percent of chief information security officers say cybersecurity breaches are unavoidable, but a lack of presence in boardrooms make them particularly difficult to prevent, according to research performed by Kaspersky Lab. Most CISOs expect their budgets to increase or stay the same but acknowledge it is difficult to get an increased budget without a guarantee of protection from cyberattacks. More than two years after ride-sharing service Uber not only failed to notify the Federal Trade Commission of a security breach that affected the data of 57 million customers, but also paid hackers $100,000 to hide the breach, the company and the FTC have finalized a new settlement. The settlement is a revision of the one made after a 2014 data breach. [Axios]( (10/26), [MediaPost Communications]( (10/26)

[US prepared to get tougher on cyberattacks](
The Trump administration has loosened red tape surrounding the nation's ability to respond to cybersecurity attacks and will use sanctions and other tactics to punish foreign offenders, national security advisor John Bolton said. "I think that if our adversaries can take steps against us in cyberspace and feel no consequences, feel no pain, bear no costs, they have no incentive to stop attacking us in cyberspace," Bolton said this week. [Former NSA head warns cyberattacks have no limits](
Retired Adm. Michael Rogers, who is set to join the Israeli cybersecurity think tank Team8 after a stint leading the National Security Agency, said there are no limits on the potential damage a cyberattack could cause. In an interview with CNBC, Rogers said the only limit is the "objective of the attacker, and what's the vector that they try to use to achieve the objective." [CNBC]( (10/23)
