[What is a passion-driven career?](
Careers driven by passion are not the same as making a living from a hobby or skill, writes Alaina Love. People pursue such work knowing it's an extension of themselves that will make a positive difference, she writes. [SmartBrief/Leadership]( (2/26)

[It's important to stand out and collaborate at the same time](
Most people want to belong to a community yet yearn for individual recognition, and John Hagel argues that these two needs aren't at odds. "No matter how smart and accomplished you are, you'll get better faster as part of a broader group, a group that will challenge you to get better but also be there to support you when you confront the inevitable frustrations and failures that can be discouraging," he writes. [Clothing maker casts itself as an alternative to offshore manufacturing](
American Giant manufacturers clothing in the US with a transparent supply chain and a compensation system that rewards hourly workers with additional wages for exceeding productivity goals. The company only sells online and enjoys financial backers who are in it for the long haul, although such an approach hasn't been adopted by the industry at large. [Racked]( (2/20)

[Merging 2 companies? Beware too much politeness](
When two organizations combine, staff may feel pressured to not express anxiety or displeasure about the change, but those repressed feelings could manifest themselves later as false or negative impressions that poison the culture, writes Quy Nguyen Huy, who co-authored research on the subject. He advises leaders "to read the subtle, non-verbal cues that betray buried anxiety or opposition." [INSEAD Knowledge]( (2/26)

A willingness to change: Change is difficult and often painful, but many of you say you're willing to challenge long-standing approaches to doing things. The real obstacle to overcome with respect to change is [changing your own mindset]( about how things need to be done. It's easy to see the flaws in others' approaches. It's more difficult to see when you need to be the one to change. Try to separate yourself from your prior decisions. Assess how the world has changed and made your prior approaches irrelevant. The less you make it about you, the easier it is to change what needs to be changed. -- Mike Figliuolo is managing director of [ThoughtLeaders](. Before launching his own company, he worked at McKinsey & Co., Capital One and Scotts Miracle-Gro. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
