theCUBE's podcasts & upcoming episodes [Cloud vs. on-premises showdown: The future battlefield for generative AI dominance]( In this week’s Analysis]( theCUBE's Dave Vellante discusses how data collected from enterprise clients presents a clear yet contradictory picture of today's artificial intelligence investment trends.
While 94% of those surveyed indicate an increased expenditure on AI this year, they are constrained by budget limitations that will require reallocating funds from other initiatives. There is a near-even split among customers regarding their preferred deployment location for generative AI – with roughly half favoring the public cloud and the other half opting for on-premises and edge solutions. “It's critical for organizations to truly understand the business case and identify ROI,” Vellante said. “The big ROI driver is going to come down to minimizing labor costs. You can put this in the productivity bucket, but at the end of the day, it's going to be about lessening the need for humans. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that unemployment will rise, it simply means that the number one driver of value is going to be reducing headcount requirements and that will most certainly change the skills required for employment.” Cloud vs. on-prem and edge
Much of the concern regarding gen AI risk is leading organizations to say they're going to do gen AI on-premises. The cloud, on-prem, edge decision is further complicated by developers' positive feedback on the feature richness and rapid innovation pace experienced in the public cloud. However, organizations also express legitimate concerns about potential intellectual property leaks, compliance issues, legal risks and the associated costs that could curtail their adoption of public cloud services.
Vellante shares the most recent data and thinking around the adoption of large language models and addresses the factors to consider when thinking about how the market will evolve. As always, we share the latest Enterprise Technology Research data to shed new light on key issues organizations face balancing risk with time to value.

This is pertinent in the context of the ongoing battle between proprietary and open-source large language models. While cloud-based solutions offer developer tools and security features, concerns about legal, compliance and intellectual property risks persist. As AI technologies become mainstream, the industry is facing a dynamic landscape with evolving implications. You can find the full conversation.
