TheCUBE Breaking Analysis + upcoming livestreams [Cloud repatriation skeptics may be proven wrong; AI and enterprise trends have changed the game]( Is cloud repatriation more than hype? We’ve been skeptical about repatriation as a notable movement, but anecdotal evidence suggests that it is happening in certain pockets. Even though we still don’t see cloud repatriation broadly showing in the numbers, certain examples have caught our attention. In addition, the potential impact of AI raises some interesting questions about where infrastructure should be physically located and causes us to revisit our premise that repatriation is an isolated and negligible trend. In this [Breaking Analysis]( we look at a number of sources, including the experiences of 37signals, which has documented its departure from public clouds. We also examine the relationship between repatriation and site reliability engineering skill sets. As always, we look at survey data from our partners at ETR, a recent FinOps study published by Vega Cloud and the Cloud Repatriation Index, which we believe is breaking a three-year trend. What's the data say about cloud repatriation? Discussing the Cloud Repatriation Index, this week’s article explains why three-year trends are being broken as buyers are locking into longer terms, using savings plans and commiting to a specific spend amount. Meanwhile, Snowflake has renegotiated its contract with AWS and retired $732 million from its previous committed spend, ostensibly to get a large discount. We recognize Dropbox as a bad example of repatriation, as it is difficult to make money building a third-party object storage service on top of AWS S3. Despite this, it makes sense for some companies, such as Zscaler or CrowdStrike Holdings, to do some things on-premises. However, repatriation from SaaS companies such as Datadog and Snowflake is currently not a factor. Let us know whether you're a skeptic or believer after reading about the evolution and business of cloud repatriation [here](. [Get the full report]( [Should the U.S. regulate AI? Not before it revolutionizes every market]( Could the artificial intelligence trend spiral out of control? On this week's edition of [theCUBE Pod]( analysts John Furrier and Dave Vellante discuss various topics, including the FTC push for AI regulation amidst the groundswell of businesses racing to dominate a burgeoning AI market. The hosts also explore whether the U.S. interest rates are as unmanageable as AI seems to be, falling oil prices and good signs of both the U.S. economy and IT sector evolving with better-than-expected earnings numbers. AI fear mongers The FTC has joined the ranks of AI fear mongers, according to Vellante. His rant of the week centers on FTC Chairperson Lina Khan. He discusses her OpEd in The New York Times calling for the regulation of AI products, suggesting that the article disregards the benefits of AI and exaggerates the risks. Critiquing Khan’s exclamation that AI endangers the masses through “mass surveillance,” Vellante suggests there are more urgent matters of problematic mass surveillance that need to be addressed, such as credit card and finance companies. “[If] you miss a payment to your car payment, your mortgage payment, some other credit card, they have that information on you, and they can bump up your rate from 0% or 7%, whatever the teaser rate is, to 22%," he said. "They're legally able to do that. So they have all the data. They have mass surveillance going on. Why isn't she talking about that?” The watershed moment for AI In other news, Furrier argues that we are experiencing a watershed moment in AI. “The new model [means] having the right tuning fork, if you will, for the data by using the large language models, by putting data in the prompts and tuning it," he said. "Now, the advantage is data insight acquisition. What data can you inject into the AI to spit out the answer first? That’s going to be a game-changer.“ Furrier and Vellante also expect that hardware will matter more in the industry due to the need for speed and feeds in powering applications. They conclude by highlighting that AI will create a renaissance in every market and change the connective tissue of software, which will be present in everything from the data center, cloud, cars and even on the bodies of people.
