TheCUBE Breaking Analysis + upcoming livestreams [Does increased cybersecurity spending actually make us safer? New lessons from RSA]( The narrative from security companies is that organizations don't spend enough money on cyber defense. It begs the question: Will spending more accurately address the problems organizations face? The conventional wisdom indicates increased investment in cyber defense will help, or at least it can't hurt. But as we and others have pointed out over the years, a crowded market and mega venture capital funding have created more tools, more complexity, more billionaires. But are we any safer? After all, as Vellante shares, “[Bad] security habits are going to trump good technology every time.” The looming identity crisis In this [Breaking Analysis]( we follow up last week's [RSA preview episode]( and continue with part two using the same play on words in an homage to the keynote speech this year from RSA CEO Rohit Ghai: Is there a looming identity crisis for the security industry? The newest member of the SiliconANGLE editorial team, longtime journalist David Strom, joins to help unpack and bring additional context to data from Enterprise Technology Research. As usual, Vellante illustrates with key examples, noting in a review of Auth0 and Okta, “we’ve said many, many times that we didn't like the price, but we liked the concept behind the acquisition.” You’ll also gain practical insights from recent Unit 42 data, Palo Alto Networks’ threat intelligence and response division. Learn why most security wounds are self-inflicted, the industrywide impact of the Akamai acquisition of Neosec, what to watch for at RSA 2023, including a passwordless world, and more in this week’s [Breaking Analysis](. The duo begins with the timely “Blue Friday'' news, discussing the frustration many Twitter users felt when they learned the blue check, indicating verified status, had been removed from several high-profile accounts and could only be reinstated by paying an $8/month fee. While many have focused on the downsides of this revamped approach, Vellante highlights the advantages of the added services associated with Twitter Blue. For example, long-form content creators can double their video upload length to four minutes. Furrier adds that Twitter Blue’s requirement for a legitimate phone number also lends credibility to verified users. Explosive business decisions Still, Musk’s business decisions, even beyond Twitter, have been literally explosive in some cases. Vellante and Furrier discuss the SpaceX “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” which means that the company's initial foray into space exploration literally blew up. As Musk continues to develop a new firm to compete with ChatGPT maker OpenAI, the hosts discuss whether his approach to large language models will do the same. An upcoming challenge for ChatGPT, according to John, is public usage. He explains the “big shock,” sharing, “[A] lot of people were talking about how they're putting stuff into ChatGPT, not knowing that it's used for public consumption. So these large language models have essentially such a wide corpus of data that the licensing and copyright infringement is a big concern. [It] gets more nuanced as things like Stack Overflow, known for developers, is charging for their questions for the training data. So they have proprietary information. That was a big shock.” In contrast to SpaceX, the digital media landscape appears to be exploding from the inside out. BuzzFeed has shut down its news division, laying off an additional 120 people. Business Insider has also laid off 10% of its staff. A potential silver lining may appear soon enough as Instagram’s founders have revealed plans to release AI-powered news technology.
