TheCUBE: Breaking Analysis + upcoming episodes [How the cloud is changing security defenses in the 2020s]( The cloud is increasingly becoming the first line of cybersecurity defense, according to Dave Vellante, as he kicks off this week’s [Breaking Analysis]( column. After a week spent talking to the security community during [theCUBE’s coverage]( of AWS re:Inforce, Vellante is ready to make some bold statements based on his firsthand research. After giving his macro-level overview of the market (it’s still a mixed picture), Vellante updates theCUBE’s community on how the hyperscalers are performing. There’s been a dip in spending across the board, with Google Cloud Platform stumbling in its bid to catch up to AWS and Microsoft Azure. Scoring hyperscalers' cloud defenses But GCP’s major deceleration in growth is not due to its tech, which is “perhaps the best in the industry,” according to Vellante. Instead, he attributes it to a “fundamental go-to-market problem.” Calculating Net Scores for the hyperscalers, Vellante demonstrates that while cloud spend may be down, adoption figures are still strong. “People may be moving some workloads back on-premises … selectively. But repatriation is definitely not a trend,” he states. The cyber-resilient abstraction layer Moving on to news from re:Inforce, Vellante shares a “major epiphany” that came out of his in-depth interviews [on theCUBE]( and informal discussions off-camera. “There are new layers taking shape, and a cloud-first trust framework emerging in cyber. Roles are shifting as a direct result of the cloud,” he states. Insights on confidential computing, the changing role of CISOs, and the revolutionary implications of AWS’ Nitro System are discussed in depth by Vellante. “Nitro, with the alternative processor architectures such as Graviton and others, enables AWS to be on a performance, cost and power consumption curve that blows away anything we’ve ever seen from Intel,” he states.
