…and mansion taxes go beyond “Sunset” It’s not fitness… it’s lifespan

…and mansion taxes go beyond “Sunset” (Noam Galai/Getty Images) It’s not fitness… it’s lifespan   Sponsored by Yesterday's market moves Dow Jones 38,852 (+0.46%) S&P 500 5,181 (+1.03%) Nasdaq 16,349 (+1.19%) Bitcoin $63,547 (-0.75%) Dow Jones 38,852 (+0.46%) S&P 500 5,181 (+1.03%) Nasdaq 16,349 (+1.19%) Bitcoin $63,547 (-0.75%) Hey Snackers, Indestructible: [Nokia]( is said to be planning a rerelease of one of its iconic ’90s [brick phones](. Unclear if the dumb phone would decrease screen time or just replace scrolling with “Snake.” Friday’s cooling jobs report stoked stocks into their biggest three-day-gain sesh since November. Today, investors will see whether [Disney]( can pull off a happily earnings after.   IV-DRIP [Equinox rolls out a $3K/month longevity membership as healthspan takes focus]( Hittin’ the gym… for IVs and red-light therapy. Equinox is bulking up its offerings with “Optimize by Equinox,” a pricey membership that aims to boost longevity. The fancy gym chain is teaming up with lab-testing startup Function Health to create personalized programs for members. Optimize, which costs $3K/month for a minimum of six months, includes perks like personal training, biomarker testing, sleep coaching, and nutrition planning. Because Equinox’s gym fee isn’t included in the Optimize package, the total comes out to over $40K/year. - VIP treatment: Equinox says the program gives members a team of experts who work to create a custom lifestyle program, similar to how it’s done for top athletes. - Step by step: Optimize will first roll out in New York City and Highland Park, Texas, this month and later expand to other cities. From “Blue Zones” to blue-light therapy… Equinox isn’t the only gym promoting the 100-year health goal. In November, rival fitness chain [Life Time]( opened a longevity-focused health-concierge service offering treatments like red-light therapies, blood tests, and peptide treatments. Soon after, [Xponential Fitness]( (which owns Pure Barre and Rumble Boxing) scooped up Lindora, a wellness clinic chain that promotes metabolic health. Meanwhile, preventive MRI scan company Prenuvo has gotten thousands of people to pay $2.5K for full-body scans, which it says can detect 500+ conditions. THE TAKEAWAY It’s not just about living longer… it’s about staying healthy while doing it. The pandemic and an aging population in the US have increased interest in healthspan, the period of life in which a person is in good health. Global life expectancy has risen more than 54% since 1950. Health insurers say medical costs have surged as more Americans go in for visits, and preventive measures and innovative treatments are gaining steam. [Offer ends 05/31 — don’t miss it!](   BIGHOUSE [Massachusetts weighs a mansion tax as the “tax the rich” push heats up]( The villain of “Selling Sunset”… is coming to the Dunkin’ state. Massachusetts is [weighing]( a mansion tax of up to 2% on homes sold for over $1M, with the revenue earmarked for affordable-housing projects. Had the tax been in place in 2022, the state could’ve generated $780M. If passed, MA’s tax will join a handful of states and cities dinging pricey property sales as the US deals with a housing-affordability crisis. - Joining the fray: Six states and Washington, DC, already have a mansion tax, along with cities like NYC, LA, and Santa Fe. Chicago voters nixed a similar plan this year. - Luxury freeze: LA’s tax (4% on $5M+ home sales) raised $215M in its first year. But it’s chilled the market. Home sales above $5M fell nearly 70% in the tax’s first year. - Mass stats: The median MA home price jumped 9% to $610K in March. Supporters say the mansion tax is necessary to fight the affordable housing shortage, but critics say it could result in even fewer sales. Taxation fixation… Americans get taxed on their income, not their net worth (and the wealthy have a lotta net worth). In 2018, US billionaires paid a lower effective tax rate than the bottom half of earners as the corporate tax rate got slashed. But pushes to level the taxing field are growing. A March poll of swing-state voters found that 70% favored raising billionaires’ taxes. Lawmakers are trying to meet the moment: Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren pitched a 3% tax on households worth $1B+, and President Biden proposed a 25% tax on Americans with $100M+. THE TAKEAWAY The ultrawealthy get agile… US multimillionaires know how to juke the taxman. In LA, some luxury homeowners found mansion-tax loopholes like splitting properties into parts. Like Jeff Bezos, who saved $600M by moving to Miami after a capital-gains tax passed in Washington state, some wealthy Americans are picking up and moving (sometimes overseas) to avoid higher tax rates.   SPYCAR [Modern carmakers are making it harder for folks to opt out of data collection as corporates hoover up customer info]( With sensors, microphones, and cameras, modern cars collect way more data than simply what’s needed to operate the vehicle. Car companies can share and sell that information to third parties, something many Americans don’t realize they’re opting into when they buy their whips. [Read more at Sherwood]( about what data collection means for car owners… and how difficult it was for one reporter to opt out of sharing on her Honda.   What else we're Snackin' - [SephoraKid](: Beauty conglomerate [Coty](, the owner of brands including CoverGirl and Kylie Cosmetics, had an easy-breezy quarter with sales up over 7%. Online orders fueled growth as beauty demand stayed strong. - [Kiss](: [Hershey](’s unwrapped sweet Q1 earnings, with sales up 9%, thanks largely to higher chocolate prices. In March, cocoa prices surged to a record $10K/metric ton (more than copper), but they’ve since cooled. - [iTrial](: The FDA approved the [Apple]( Watch’s heart-monitoring tech for use in clinical trials, making it the first digital health gadget to be greenlighted through its Medical Device Development Tools program. - [Buffetchella](: [Berkshire Hathaway]( reported before Saturday’s shareholder event that Q1 operating profits jumped 39% annually, boosted by Geico gains. An acquisition dry spell has grown Berkshire’s cash pile to $189B. - [Tassel](: Columbia canceled its main graduation ceremony, following USC. Sit-ins over the Israel-Hamas war have led to campus confrontations as protesters call for universities to divest from companies that do business with Israel.   Snack Fact of the Day [Only three US states don’t have any billionaires](d   Tuesday - Consumer-credit data - Apple’s “Let Loose” event - National Teacher Day - Earnings expected from Disney, Reddit, Lyft, Kenvue, Kellogg, BP, Nintendo, Duke Energy, UBS, Match Group, Rivian, Twilio, Wynn Resorts, Ionis, Crocs, Tempur Sealy, Virgin Galactic, and TripAdvisor Authors of this Snacks own shares of: Apple, Disney, Match Group, and Reddit   [Instagram]( [Twitter]( [Sherwood Logo](sherwood.news) Sherwood Media, LLC produces fresh and unique perspectives on topical financial news and is a fully owned subsidiary of Robinhood Markets, Inc., and any views expressed here do not necessarily reflect the views of any other Robinhood affiliate...
