In place of the official Senate pin, I wear a pin depicting a yellow canary in a birdcage. It was given to me decades ago by a Lorain steelworker at a Workers' Memorial Day rally. The pin hearkens back to the early 1900s, when coal miners would bring canaries deep into the mines to warn them of poisonous gases. Back then, workers didn't have a union strong enough – or a government that cared enough – to protect them. Together, we changed that. We passed worker safety laws and overtime pay. We banned child labor. We passed clean air and safe drinking water laws. We enacted Social Security and Medicare, and we made progress protecting women’s rights and civil rights. My canary pin inspires me to keep pushing – because while we’ve come a long way, our fight for the dignity of all work is far from over. I'm all in to continue this important fight, but I won't be able to win reelection without sustained grassroots support from folks like you.
