My name is Sherrod Brown. I’m the senior Senator from Ohio. And today, I want to tell you the story of a canary pin. You are receiving this message because of your support for Democrats. I’m the senior Senator from Ohio. And today, I want to tell you the story of a canary pin. If you see pictures of me, you may notice I sometimes wear a pin depicting a yellow canary in a cage. Several years ago, I went to a Workers’ Memorial Day rally in Lorain, Ohio, and a steelworker from Local 1104 gave me the pin. Miners used to bring canaries into the mines in order to check for dangerous levels of gas. If the canary died, they knew they had to get out of the mine. Back then, there were no formal protections for workers. They only had each other. So they banded together to fight for the right to collectively bargain, and for safer work conditions and against child labor. I’ve worn the canary pin ever since I got it that day. It reminds me not just of the workers’ rights movement, but of every hard working man and woman in America and the families they support. Too many leaders in Washington don't understand the Dignity of Work. Whether you swipe a badge or punch a clock, collect tips or collect a salary, I'm on your side. I promise to keep fighting in the U.S. Senate to give a voice to all Americans -- regardless of their zip code, economic status, race, or gender. Since the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United, special interests and outside groups have gained a powerful edge in Washington. They spend millions of dollars to have their issues heard. Middle-class families don’t have that luxury. I came to Congress to give hardworking Americans a voice. And together, we have built one of the greatest grassroots teams in the world. {NAME}, I'm hoping that you will join us. You've done some great work for Democrats. I hope you'll be a part of my grassroots team as we continue our work -- together. As I’ve pledged since day one, I will continue to work to shine a light on dark money and fight for greater transparency. One of the best ways to stay involved and follow my progress is to join my extended campaign family on social media. I’m glad to have you on our side.
