Through the course of her life she wrote hundreds of works, most particularly for piano and for voice. Due to social constraints of the time, Mendelssohn was discouraged from both performing in public and publishing her compositions under her own name. A number of her works were published under the name of her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. Later in life, she was able to publish a collection of songs under her own name.
