"She just veered off the road and she hit a pole, and from there, everything changed," her mother, Peggy Means, shared with Good Morning America. At 35, Jennifer, a devoted wife and mother, found her life and that of her family's forever altered by a sudden car accident. The incessant ringing of Peggy's phone at work [heralded the news]( that plunged their lives into a years-long battle for recovery. Rushed to the hospital, Jennifer was placed in a medically-induced coma, her condition grave. Peggy recalled the doctor's grim prognosis, "They encouraged me, by like day two or three to take her off [life support]." But [Peggy's response was unwavering](, "No, it's in God's hands." This marked the beginning of a relentless fight for her daughter's life. As days turned into years, Peggy began to feel the weight of her daughter's absence in the world. Friends stopped visiting, and Jennifer's husband moved on, creating a life without her. "Your friends quit coming," Peggy lamented, highlighting the painful reality of being slowly forgotten. Yet, Peggy's dedication never wavered, visiting Jennifer nearly every day. She was holding onto the belief that her daughter's presence still lingered, waiting to reawaken. The breakthrough came unexpectedly one sunny day in August 2022. Jennifer laughed. It was in response to a joke that her mother had made, and it scared Peggy to hear it at first. Could a moment of joy shatter five years of silence? Apparently, yes, it can.
