The young man was rushing to catch a bus that was already pulling away. In his pursuit, he tripped and, next thing he knew, he was pinned under its rear tire. Without missing a beat, the bus driver halted the vehicle and, with the combined strength of passengers and bystanders, they managed to lift the bus and free the trapped young man. Frank Kurze, one of the brave volunteers, recounted the chaotic scene to German news channel N-TV: “I saw the men trying to lift the bus, and it was clear to me that I also had to help lift the bus and try pull the young man from underneath.” Nearby, medical professionals from a local center rushed to provide immediate assistance. Michelle Rueckborn was one such nurse who responded to the emergency. “We were at work when we heard screams, and our boss looked out of the window and saw what had happened, and said ‘Take the doctor’s case and run,’” she shared. While the young man was in a state of shock, he was fortunate to escape with only scrapes, bruises, and an arm injury. Sandra Grunwald, another attending nurse, mentioned, “He was responsive but very perplexed and didn’t know what was happening.” Following the incident, he was promptly taken to a hospital for surgery. While N-TV reported his release, Berlin police have yet to confirm further details about his condition. The Berlin police were so deeply moved by the collective effort, they lauded the rescuers as "heroes." Expressing their gratitude, they posted, “Thank you, Spandau, thank you, Berlin,” on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. One thing they likely don’t expect, though, is for said steer to turn into a record-shattering behemoth! That's the story of Fred Balawender and his steer, Tommy. Initially, Fred observed that Tommy was slightly larger than the average steer. However, as time passed, it became clear that Tommy was no ordinary bovine. By the age of 13, Tommy had grown to an astonishing height of 6 feet 1 inch and tipped the scales at 3,000 pounds! The gentle giant began to overshadow his peers, turning heads and capturing hearts wherever he went. His daily diet? A staggering five gallons of grain, one and a half bales of hay, and water equivalent to two full bathtubs! Yet, it's not just Tommy's size that's noteworthy. His endearing personality sets him apart. Often described as the embodiment of a "gentle giant," Tommy exudes a calm and kind-hearted nature. Children, especially, are magnetically drawn to him, and he returns their love with his gentle ways. Fred, Tommy's proud owner, affectionately remarked, “He’s like our pet. He’s just something to be proud of, and I really, really like the guy. He’s everybody’s friend up here. Everybody knows Tom.” Tommy's local celebrity status was elevated even further when he was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the "largest living steer" on the globe. This monumental achievement likely called for a celebration with a feast of Tommy's favorite treats.
